Wazzup/notup w/ SP3? spontaneous disruption... - Buzz - 08-25-2008

Mrs. Buzz's venerable windoze laptop has added an undesirable behavior of late; it shuts downs while sleeping...

It didn't used to do this before installing SP3. Now, whenever it feels like it, which has been about 2 or 3X/week, at some point after going into sleep mode; monitor and hard drive off, after preset periods of inactivity, it shuts all the way down w/o warning. This is while plugged into the wall BTW. It's not on a timer, or set to hibernate, or scheduled shut down, it just does it randomly on its own volition. Battery always shows fully charged (or 98/99%), and is good for 1-1/2 to 2 hrs when not plugged in. It was a former near-TOL Compaq Evo when new 4-5 years ago, and is surprisingly still pretty peppy, except for this recent problem. It passes all the usual hardware tests, but obviously has to be getting a shut down command from somewhere. Any ideas what could be triggering this, and how to correct it? Thanks,

Buzz

Uninstall SP3 and see how it goes.

Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs, click on the checkbox "Show Updates"...scroll down and select Service Pack 3.

I've been afraid to install SP3 -- been rolling along with SP2 just fine now for quite a few years and see no reason to tempt fate.

I installed SP3 on my Dell Vostro 400.

Knock on wood...

I haven't noticed any problems. In fact, things seemed pretty snappy after the update.

the laptop's performance actually improved significantly w/ SP3, it was getting a bit sluggish in its last SP2 days, which is why I tempted fate... that, and that a few months back Mrs. Buzz's work finally weaned everyone off the old windoze centric VPN, and onto a web based extranet that is Mac friendly, which was the real reason I felt emboldened enough to tempt fate. now that it's faster, I just want it to stay on until a human tells it to shut down... or we get a new MBP.

I haven't seen many issues, if any really, with SP3 throughout an enterprise. Like you mentioned, there is a significant speed increase that is very noticeable on most systems after SP3 is installed.

I think the only problem I read about was AMD processors (x2's?) going through and endless restart sequence after the SP3 update was installed.

just like a Mac; Intel inside... (only slower, 1.8GHz)
