Sounds like a similar business model as a TiVo lifetime subscription?
Unlimited US calling is good for the life of the product.

I tend to like the idea of tying the cost to the product, not a monthly bill, although there's risk there as well. I'd certainly want it behind a double-throw-down UPS/surge+spike protector.

What is the Peer-to-Peer concept behind ooma?
ooma's call-routing algorithm, a/k/a the people-powered network, uses the Internet to connect local calling areas throughout the US for free instead of relying primarily on traditional phone switches, known as the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). ooma's call-routing technology ensures a completely transparent experience, so the ability to make and receive calls is not impacted when the line is in use by another ooma caller. Customers who purchase or subscribe to ooma Premier are automatically exempted from the people-powered network.

If there was some guarantee that their service would be around in a year or more, it sounds like a good idea. Figure $25/month for VoIP telephone service and it pays for itself in a year (with paying for number porting). I may be interested in trying it, as I currently have VoIP and am pretty happy with it. Hopefully they'll be rolling it out to more retailers soon. It is not at any local Best Buys, but you can order it online at bestbuy.com and Amazon.com.
