minimum reqs for server? - bazookaman - 09-22-2008

Just something to store files and run OSX server. Nothing fancy. Whats the minimum machine needed?

Re: minimum reqs for server? - mstudio - 09-22-2008

I dunno what the minimum is, but I'm using a G4 Mini with a gig o'ram. It's been working great.

Depends on the version of OS X Server you're running...

I'm running 10.3.9 Server on a G4 MDD dual 1.25ghz, and it's been running GREAT...
If I actually added some RAM and a fast HD, it would probably work better.. but my throughput requirements are pretty light.

I have the same setup as Paul F and it serves out for a dozen users just fine.

I have installed 10.3 Server on a Sawtooth for testing purposes.
It worked fine, but it was not stress-tested.

I ran 10.4 Server on a dual G4-450 for a couple years. Ran nicely for our 6-person workgroup.

10.5 server requires a minimum 867 Mhz processor. Says it require 1GB ram, but I would recommend more.

The minimum for 10.5 server to run and the minimum for reasonable performance in your situation may be different. What are you hoping to do? How many users?

Not too sure. it for a friend of mine who has a small office. no more than 3 or 4 people I would guess. I think he mostly wants it for storage and accessibility by all.

Re: minimum reqs for server? - bik - 09-23-2008

Well, for 3-4 people, the minimum should do it in terms of processor speed. That means 867 G4 for Leopard server. For Tiger server, any G4 will do, and some G3s.

Some would say a Mac Mini can do the job. That's probably true in most cases, but I'll say that 2.5" 5400 RPM drives stink when multiple users are accessing at once. For that reason, I'd recommend something with a fast drive, or, better yet, separate OS and data drives.

G4 867 MHz or better, G5 or Intel
1GB of RAM
DVD drive
20GB free on the boot drive.

A mini would serve great but I'd hook up an external to Firewire as the data drive, not the internal.

Also, unless you need a fairly sophisticated user and group management, I'd recommend simple client filesharing over purchasing OSX Server. I tried Server and found it was much more than needed for simple filesharing.

I have a G4/667 with 1GB RAM running 10.5 (client) serving 1.2 TB to 3 users without a problem. But it's also not a gigabit network so it hasn't really been taxed.
