It was in a static-free bag and I de-staticed myself. The ebay description said it worked in MDDs. It fits OK, but it has a few different circuits than the one that came out. The original had a "T03" printed on a round piece of foil, wjile the new one has a "T12". Are there any other numbers I could look far that would identify the new modem?
Also, do I need to shut down every time I plug and unplug the modems to test them?

Hotswapping mobo-attached devices doesn't generally work - the system detects those devices on startup. You should reboot when changing hardware not attached to swap-friendly buses like FW/USB.
What does System Profiler show under Network...Modems?

HECK YES.

If it fits then it's likely to be the right one. Apple changed the screw-holes around just enough between different models to keep them from being easily swapped.
What version of the OS are you running? Under 10.5, you probably have to add the interface in your Network pref's using the plus-button in the lower left corner of the window.
A quick way to check whether it's recognized is to launch the System Profiler and look under the Network-heading to see if it lists a modem.

I tried a 2nd one (I got 4 @$4.50). It works at V34. So, I'm back in business. I got the extras because this is the 3rd modem I've lost from trees falling on the electric lines. Thanks for your help.

Why not get a surge protector for your modem line? Some of the better surge protectors provide such a connection.

I think the correct internal modem modulation should be V.92 and
Firmware Version: APPLE VERSION 2.6.6
Driver: InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.6)
At least that's what my System Profiler shows for the same type of machine.
Guess if V.34 works what the heck.

It wouldn't work at V92 or V90. Also, my ISP told me that it would be more stable at V34 or V32.
