Mobile broadband card advice needed - D & C @ Work - 09-24-2008

It's for a Sony laptop, I'm in the Los Angeles area. I really have no clue as to which provider would give the best overall coverage. I'm assuming there are yearly contracts involved, no idea.

Feel free to post any links.

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

I use Sprint (and previously Verizon) in the Los Angeles area. They are both similar and both have their dead spots.

http://www.evdoinfo.com/ has all the info you'd ever want. Their 3g stores also have daily and weekly rentals of EVDO cards and service. More expensive than a monthly plan, but if you don't want to deal with a 2 year contract, it might be the way to go.

A friend is currently living and traveling extensively in a motor home and is using a Verizon card, based on the advice of people here around the first of the year. She's been in a couple of places so remote that she hasn't had service, but, overall it's been reliable, and she's been able to access the internet from some areas where she had no AT&T cell service. (Although that's been better than expected, too, considering some of the places she's been!)

I would get the Sprint card (as I recommended for your friend, Alpha) They have the biggest EVDO network, and the broadest roaming agreements. They've won numerous "best of" awards and comparos, and althouth the technology is the same, get better throughput generally than Verizon.

As Gareth recommended, evdoinfo.com is a great resource... They have forums, as well as selling hardware and service plans...

Ack! I said Verizon in my post, but she really did get the Sprint card!! Geez, D & C @ Work, I hope you didn't run out and buy Verizon! This is the second time today the old brain let me down. I may have to curl up in a cocoon and hide from the world. Sad

Thanks everyone for the replies, you have all been a big help. I'll do some research over at evdoinfo and go from there. Seems Sprint is the most likely choice right now. And no worries AlphaDog, haven't bought anything yet.

Once again, thank you!

Sprint gets another vote here--just installed 3 of the USB cards in 3 MBP's. They work great (where there's coverage, obviously) and are relatively quick.
