Leopard Finder View changes on restarts - GGD - 09-25-2008

I'm finally getting around to trying out Leopard, I did an erase and install and used Migration Assistant to migrate from 10.4.9. I installed all of the software updates and it's 10.5.5 now.

Besides a lot of UI differences that I think are a step backwards, I am seeing one thing that I think is either a bug or I'm just not understanding how to control it.

I tend to use both List and Column View on different Finder windows, and I can set them up like that, but when I restart, the windows do open in the same positions, but all of the windows are set to the same View, which seems to be the last View that I selected on a Finder window before the restart.

I don't remember Tiger doing this. Is this normal or is there possibly something corrupt from the Migration. I tried deleting the Finder's .plist file, but that didn't change the behavior.

Has anyone else run into this? Any solutions/suggestions?

Thanks

Probably not a bug, mine is the same. I never noticed it because I always work in column view.

That's by design.

If you want a window to retain its view settings, set them, select Show View Options, and tick the check box at the top.

Exactly what B@rl sez. ...and tick the check box at the top. is important, don't forget to check it.

I have several folders set to open in Icon view while most others are set for Column. Working just fine in 10.5.

Just tried it, and it's still a little weird, the option applies to a folder, not to a window. So if you switch to another folder in that same window, it does not retain it's view option across restarts unless you also do the Show View Options for that folder.

I was really looking for a preference that applied to that specific Finder window rather than to a specific folder.

Yeah, 10.5 has a bad habit of reusing windows. 10.4 also did it to a limited extent, but 10.5 seems to treat every window as a portal, which can make things confusing when it shows two views of the same thing.

It's easy to illustrate by putting a folder with an open window in the Trash, then emptying it. Instead of closing the window as the Trash is emptied, it fills the vacated window with a view of another folder, typically the parent directory of the folder that was just deleted.

The (good) rules of the Classic Mac OS no longer apply, which can be frustrating if you're a vet and not a Switcher who doesn't realize that Apple no longer follows some of the rules that made the Mac UI great.

I'm pretty annoyed by this too. How is it an improvement to have to mess with menus and settings to get windows to stay the way you put them?
