I have had two teeth removed in the past 4 years. One is number 19 and is a molar. It is on the bottom, and I have no problem eating, etc. And there is another one, on the other side on the bottom. From what I am told the #19 use to have two teeth in that location.
At the time of removal I was told that I should come in and have implants so that the upper teeth do not move.
Well I went in for a teeth cleaning today, and besides having a small cavity on #28, we started talking about the implants again. Next thing I know I paid the 300 for the circular xray to tell if my bone is strong enough, and now tomorrow at 10:15 I will get off work early and start the process for two implants. Putting the pins in.
The main Dentist thought that the molar was a definite good choice since food is chewed on it. But the cost is going to be $3000 each. Man thats a lot of money. So I sit here tonight trying to rationalize that I have went 2-3 years, and there is no problem. I just dont know if missing a tooth will cause the uppers to drop... anyway, does any one have any advice about implants?
I asked about their high price, and the advertised $800 implants I hear about on the radio, and they say they use quailty products, and people, I guess.

The answer is absolutely. Not only will they eventually drop, but the upper will gradually shift back from your bite not aligning properly. I'll give you three guesses how I know, and the first two don't count. Implants weren't available at the time I lost a lower molar, so there wasn't a reasonable option. The dropping and shifting will certainly happen eventually. Now $3,000 per tooth? Wow, that is a lot.
If you decide to cancel the implants, you might ask your dentist if a nightguard would be helpful. I'm now wearing one to minimize the shifting of one of my teeth. It seems to be working, although it had already shifted before I got the guard.

Get a 2nd opinion. This is no different than any other medical procedure and you shouldn't proceed without one.

Wish I had the money back a few years ago to have an implant done. An upper molar split down to the nerve, and the choice was to either pull it or do a root canal and hope the pinned pieces stayed together. Not having the money then for a root canal, but hoping to in a couple years have it for an implant, I had it pulled. Things did not come together, and I never got the implant done. Now a dozen years later the molar in the lower jaw has risen into the gap and I am not a candidate any longer for an implant. It has thrown various issues into my bite on that side. At the least, follow AlphaDog's advice and see if a guard is advisable if you decide to not go through with the implant.

Definitely look into the vacation deal--could easily pay for itself--just pick a really, really good place--India? Thailand? Mexico? I recall something good about Mexico...

This thread hits home.
I went in for a root canal on a bottom molar. Long story short, they tried to seal the inside of the tooth but couldn't. Choice was to forget the pain I already endured, temporary cap it and go to a specialist to try to seal it again. The dentist said he doubted the tooth could be saved.
I said pull it.
Right on the spot where I chewed on my left side. Thought about getting an implant but there is no way I could justify $3k. Too many other things with higher priority like getting braces on my oldest daughter's teeth.
But to have to suffer with a screwed up bite for the rest of my life? Might have to check and see what the going rate is for an implant.

Sounds like the dentist is trying to make the most $$4 out of you that he can. probably needs to make a payment on his Ferrari or something...

If the teeth on both sides of the extraction are solid, bridges will work well, and will retain the spacing of existing dental arch.
Implants are the "latest and greatest" and do work well - but there are less invasive alternatives. My husband had a bridge for 20 years - and it worked great until the tooth on one side fractured - so he got an implant.
Before jumping in, I think investigation of alternatives and alternative pricing is a good idea.

My daughter just went to Yuma AZ & across the border for 2 root canals plus I dunno.
$800 cash.
Google their fancy websites for prices.
I just got #20 root canal and top done. $2500 Central Calif.
