I DID IT!! Replaced the hard drive on a 20in AL imac - phew! - hal - 09-26-2008

It was long and tedious and scary.

I got a copy of the apple repair manual for this thing - don't think I could have done it with the few guides I saw on the net.

MUST HAVE: suction cups to remove the glass. T6 & T8 drivers

the biggest problem for this job was keeping it all clean. Any dust on the inside of the glass will be there forever. I did the best I could to keep things clean, but dust was everywhere on the LCD when I was done. A few smudges too. The guide said to NOT use iklear on the LCD, but the dust was pretty easy to remove with just a clean cloth.

I'm installing the OS now - think I did it al right. I'll have to make sure that things like the drive temp sensors, isight and other little goodies are still working.

This was a rehearsal for doing the 24"... not so hot on the idea now...

we'll see

You are brave and strong,

I don't know the back story to this one... Is this because of drive failure, needed more space, or just for fun?

Tee hee, I typed fun.

Jeff

no back story - just need to have bigger drives

It isn't so bad once you have done the first one. Worst part IMO is getting the glass off and making sure you don't scratch the screen with the pointy posts. Second worst part, as you figured out, is getting the screen back on without a ton of dust all over the place.

I upgraded our 24" Al iMac about a month ago (replaced the original 320GB with a 750GB). Online guides were key and, as you said, suction cups to remove the glass. I bought some that were attached to small shower rack for shampoo. I used two of them and the little racks ended up acting like handles so it worked out well.

Congrats!

How difficult would it have been for them to design that thing with removable panel on the back?

Sure, Apple makes some pretty things, but user serviceability isn't something they do very well.

not really true? or it sorta comes and goes?

look at the macpro/G5/G4/G3 B&W towers or the macbook -- all super easy

first G5 imacs were easy

G3 powerbooks were easy

Cube was easy too...

G4 PowerBooks are a tremendous PITA to change out the HD. I still have a bit of a gap above the disc slot that I can't close up. Those clips... Luckily I don't use it anywhere too dusty.

Yeah, eventually had to take my G4AlPB to a professional to get my new HD installed. And yes, there is a small, tiny, miniscual (sp) gap that was not there before the installation.

What a pain:banghead:
