Sewer repair-resleeve or pipe burst approach? - fromish - 10-03-2008

Our neighbor is redoing the sewer lateral that connects our house and his house to the city sewer. The sewer is fine now, but 50+ years old, and as he is doing a complete remodel, he wants to resleeve or replace the pipe using the 'pipe burst' approach where the existing pipe is cracked as a new plastic pipe is winched through the sewer. Does anyone have knowledge or experience of these alternative, non trenching approaches? Cost, durability, reliability, problems-your expert perspective would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Mike. I hadn't seen the earlier post. Looks from the 'Mike Love" info and the post the liner is superior. Now to see if there are additional sources of info and on to the quotes. I will let you know how it turns out.

We did pipe bursting.

I would do it again. The pipe lining company was expensive, did not try to find a cheaper pipe lining company.

Pipe bursting drops in a seamless pipe from the basement to the curb (well in yard cleanouts are required here) and requires holes at each end.

Pipe lining only needs access at one end and if you have good access does not require a hole in the basement.

The pipe that was in the yard was thin, thin white. The pipe liner guys put in a 3 layer pipe - maybe this will last longer than 30 years of the original - of course with have a VERY large maple tree in the yard.
