Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - pinkoos - 10-17-2008 Ripped from: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/16/jobs_responds_to_outrage_over_macbooks_missing_firewire.html ![]() Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - Jimmypoo - 10-17-2008 Is that true? I don't use DV so I don't know that end of the market at the moment. Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - clay - 10-17-2008 It's true for most tape-less (i.e. either hard drive or flash memory based) camcorders. That seems to be the trend of late for many consumer level cams. If that's his only reason for cutting FW, what does he have to say about anyone using a FW external HD or FW audio interface or any other device? Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - kj4btkljv - 10-17-2008 I see a mix of USB and Firewire, one even sports an HDMI connector... Like I've got an HDMI in on anything I own? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=129 Jeff Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - 3d - 10-17-2008 Is it true? I don't know either, video editing is a hobby i don't have time for. In the 6 years i've owned a 17" powerbook with firewire. I've used the firewire port exactly zero times. My OWC external HD i use for backups has USB2. Another port i don't miss is the Phone Modem. I remember the uproar that caused when it was taken out. Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - TLB - 10-17-2008 I too, only use USB2 for backup and external storage on my laptop. The speed hit isn't noticible to me and I've had no compatibility issues. I do have an older mini-DV camera with Firewire, but I haven't done any video on my laptop in years and if I got bak into it, a new camera would probably be in order. Me, I use FireWire every single day for one reason or another. 1) Compact flash card reader, because it's really fast, for my digital still camera images. 2) Dozens of firewire based hard drive enclosures. I never bought the USB/FireWire combo versions, because FireWire was, and still is, so much better. 3) FireWire target disk mode. 4) Migration Assistant through the FireWire port. 5) Importing DV video footage from my Canon DV camera. 6) WebieTech FireWire DriveDock. If Apple pulls FireWire out of all of it's consumer level machines, I'm going to be a) upset, and b) forced to move to different technology, namely USB2, for all of these types of peripherals. It won't be the end of the world. So, the new MacBook isn't for me. Oh well, it looks cool anyway. Jeff Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - Kramerica - 10-17-2008 It's true, although even if a consumer-level user's new camcorder is USB, many may still have their old firewire-only mini-dv cam and a hundred tapes they'd like to try editing with the fantastic Mac + iMovie they keep hearing about. Not so good for them. Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - 3d - 10-17-2008 kj4btkljv wrote: What do you mean by "all of us"? You have DOZENS of FW based harddrives? DOZENS?? Yikes. I have 1 external for backups. And what the frek is Firewire target disk mode?! Another feature i've never used in 10+ years of Mac ownership. Are you sure the 13 inch low-end MacBook line was meant for you anyway? I don't mean to be sarcastic or anything... just wondering. Re: Steve responds to Mac user's email regarding lack of FW on new MBs - Mr645 - 10-17-2008 I use FW800 for card readers and hard drives. If your moving 34MB, USB is fine, but moving 30GB at a time? FW cuts time in 1/2. TDM is great and I use it often. It's easier then networking two Macs, like when moving data from a laptop to the tower. How about adding a eSATA port? On each side put 2 USB, 1FW400 then put a FW800 on one side and eSATA on the other. Get rid of the phone jack, does anyone still use that? |
