Rented Or Borrowed Car - How Can You Tell Which Side To Pump Gas? - Rick-o - 10-17-2008

I just got an email that explains an easy way to tell:

"If you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump.
The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the gas pump."
If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo). It is that simple!"

I've been driving for over 30 years and didn't have a clue. :dunno:

That doesn't seem logical. If the handle is literally on the right side of the real pump as you drive up, then the gas cap is on the left side of the car. You sure you don't have it backwards? My wife's car has an icon that shows both the gas pump and the car showing which side the cap is on (i.e. the pump is on the right, the car is on the left, with the hose between them).

I never knew that either! Of course I had to go and check with all the cars outside and yes, it's true, except for the old 1954 Standard which doesn't have a picture of a pump anyway. Probably doesn't work with some of the basic 1970s Trabants either as their fuel gauge is a dipstick under the bonnet!

Not.... True. In fact, on my Honda the filler cap is on the left side, but the 'nozzle' on the pump icon is on the right side. Some cars have a little arrow pointing to the proper side under the gas gage icon, but not all. Basically ya have to look. And if it's one of those 70's lead sleds that has the gas nozzle hidden behind the license plate... well, you're just gonna be deeply confuelzed.

OK, so it's a false claim but in the drive at the moment are a Peugeot 406, a VW Golf and a Maserati. Two openings are on the right and one on the left and the pictures on the gauge show that. Three out of three is not scientific in any way I know.
