Jobs responds to outrage over MacBook's missing FireWire

In one of his characteristically terse email replies, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has reportedly told one Mac user that changes in video camera technology have reduced the need for FireWire on his company's 13-inch MacBooks.

The one-line response to a fan complaining over the lack of FireWire on the new entry level aluminum MacBooks is blunt but also points out that technology has changed since the company began including FireWire with Macs in 1999.

"Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2," Jobs supposedly wrote in an email, a copy of which was posted to the popular Flickr image sharing website.

Jobs is likely not pleased about the current state of FireWire himself. Apple invented the standard in the late 80s as a hot pluggable replacement for SCSI, with a special emphasis on supporting media streaming with isochronous, real-time data transfers. The company then released the specification through a standards body to become IEEE 1394, where others including DEC, Texas Instruments, and Sony contributed to its development as well.

But cameras hus firewire. All of them don't use USB do they? Mine, and one Nikon I just bought this year, still uses firewire to download but uses USB in the charging setup stand.

maybe he should listen to his customers... he's said as much in some of his keynotes.

I think Steve is out of touch with his customers if this outrage surprised him.

Wow what a load of spin. Jobs writes:

"Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2"

Is a casual, neutral sentence, arguably, a statement of ordinary fact. How is it terse?

Because he didn't write a long, friendly letter? Because he didn't offer to buy him an ice cream?

As quick little one-sentence emails go, looks A-Okay to me. He actually responded. This should be a good example of why CEOs rarely respond to emails, and is further proof: CEOs should never, ever reply to ordinary people.

Otherwise, they get publicity like this:

"Jobs is mad! Look at this angry email he wrote!"

"Did you see that? He nearly took the guy's head off!"

"Did you hear Steve Jobs bitched at some guy in an email?"

"He's really mad about the Firewire thing, did you see that pissed-off email he wrote?"

I called him a d!ck. And then I reached for his class notes, and I ripped 'em up. I said, 'Hey bud. Two can play this game.' I'll tell you this. If he hassles me again, I can't be responsible for what happens...

Just did, thanks. Had trouble selecting the Feedback Type, since this situation could apply to all of them one way or another.

From Dictionary.com"

1. neatly or effectively concise; brief and pithy, as language.
2. abruptly concise; curt; brusque.

#1 definitely applies and is, I believe, the applicable definition. #2 seems to be how most interpreted Jobs' remark, however.

I've been so silly!

Of course!

I'm supposed to go out and buy a new $600 camcorder on top of my $1300 MacBook.

I can fix all of my problems just by spending money!

(So why didn't I get just get a MacPro and hire people to lug it around for me? Who needs a laptop when they have money to burn?)

(Rich people say the funniest things.)
