Opinion: Seagate vs Hitachi HD - Joey Cupcakes - 10-17-2008

I was bitten by the IBM Deathstar problem several years ago and have since strictly gone with Seagate and it's 5-year warranty. (Seagate has not been perfect either, but pretty close.) IBM hard drives, of course, were absorbed by Hitachi. With Hitachi 1TB drives now available below $100 (after rebate), it's time to ask: has Hitachi earned back the trust of power users?

I've had a Hitachi as the boot drive in my G5 for almost 3 years now, and have had no problems with it.

Just had a Hitachi drive fail in a MacBook. Still under AppleCare; Apple replaced it with a Fujitsu.

The only drives I have had any trouble with in the last 5 years have all been Seagates (2 out of a dozen or so). The Hitachis and WD's & Samsungs have all been flawless....

The only hard drives i've EVER had problems with have been Seagates, IBMs, Hitachis, Samsungs, Maxtors and Western Digitals.

On the other hand I've had some pretty good luck with Seagates, IBMs, Hitachis, Samsungs, Maxtors and Western Digitals

The "deathstar" genre of problem drives haven't even been manufactured for many years. They pre-date SATA by years anyway.

Just another drive now.
