My son's ibook needs some care....
Anyone have a source or brand for a reliable replacement batt for an iBook 1ghz 14" white..?
I'm assuming the batt replacement is fairly easy??
Also, is it a pain to upgrade the hard drive on this machine? Never cracked open an iBook.
It's got a 60 gig but I'd like to install something bigger.

I've done the iBook hard drive replacement 3 times. The first time will take probably 2 hours, maybe more, and is a little bit harrowing.
Given the high cost of a new battery, the price of a new hard drive, and the PITA of disassembling the iBook, I really think you're better off buying the cheapest refurb MacBook for $799. You will have a machine far more capable than the iBook.
Figure that you can probably sell the iBook for $200 even in its current state, and that replacing the battery and HD would cost perhaps $175, and the cost difference to have a spankin new, super fast MacBook just isn't that much. Just my $.02.

We bought a battery for a 14" ibook from these guys for $65:

They have a website that sells the same thing and has warranty information. When we bought it in April, the website batteries were a bit more expensive than the Ebay batteries:

Battery has a one year warranty and I didn't find any complaints about them. The battery charged right up and runs my daughter's 14" ibook for about 3.5 hours (taking notes in class type of work). The color of the battery is a bit off, but that didn't matter to us because it's on the back.

Listen to us. Really. PITA doesn't begin to describe it, and any misc. carelessness is going to result in even more repair (like the time I forgot to unplug the trackpad cable and ripped it....). It can be done, but really, even a refurb from these guys http://www.affordablecomputers.com/pages/products.php/RP-12720 would come with a years warranty, and after selling yours, you're only $100 or so to the "bad".
I wouldn't do it-and I'm fearless.

With a little patience, I got a new-in-box 12" iBook battery off ebay @ $10 (for my $35 OWC iBook G3)

I have taken a few laptops to pieces before, so am not a complete novice- however, I was going to buy a cheap second hand iBook G4 and put a new drive in it, but one look at the instructions and I changed my mind completely. It looks like an absolute nightmare. On a side note, I picked up a very cheap Titanium instead (the last generation) and the hard drive swap was so easy I thought that I must have missed something.
