iPhone Update / Redownload Duplicates - mjgkramer - 11-13-2008 In August I posted a question entitledi"Phone Duplicate Applications Question". Incredibly I received no responses, so here goes again. When I download an update or another copy of an iPhone app into iTunes, it does not overwrite the original, but instead keeps the older copies and numbers the new copy sequentially, such as the following: BJ Run Lite 1.ipa BJ Run Lite 2.ipa BJ Run Lite 4.ipa BJ Run Lite.ipa Questions are: 1. Does iTunes keep a list or registry of the applications or does it just use the newest copy in the Mobile Applications folder? 2. Can I delete the older copies without causing a problem? 3. After deleting the older copies can I rename the newest copy that I keep by deleting the space and the number in the file name without causing a problem? Re: iPhone Update / Redownload Duplicates - Monster - 11-13-2008 http://weblogs.redeyechicago.com/iphoneblog/2008/08/those-applicati.html are you still on an older version of iTunes? The "fix" is to rename the files yourself. Take the file with a number and get rid of the number so just the name shows. Then, drag the new file to your desktop and drag it back into iTunes. That "fixes" it. Re: iPhone Update / Redownload Duplicates - RAMd®d - 11-13-2008 It would seem that you are in fact using an older version of the 'Phone's firmware. With the current version, each app gets replaced by its updated version. 1) Newest version/copy 2) Yes. 3) Yes. I went through the folder and tossed all the older versions. No problems. In your example, you'd toss all but the latest version (BJ Run Lite 4.ipa) and then rename it (BJ Run Lite). For some reason I don't recall the newest versions showing the file type .ipa, but I could be misremembering. Re: iPhone Update / Redownload Duplicates - mjgkramer - 11-13-2008 The Mac Mini that I have my iTunes library on is running iTunes 8.0.1 (11) which is the current version. |
