Canon MP620 AIO? - josntme - 11-25-2008
Excuse my ignorance but a friend has asked me and I need an answer.
Does this printer connect wirelessly to the computer or does he need a wireless router?
I have no knowledge how these work and since he is in the woods with dialup he has no need for wireless routers.

he doesnt need a router, but his mac needs to have wireless capabilities
does he really need wireless? or a photo specific printer?

He needs wireless because his wife is downstairs with her iBook and he is upstairs with his iMac. Both have airport cards but he will be using the usb hookup. Also, someone gave the printer to his wife as a present so they want to use it.

turn on printer sharing on his mac...
as long as her ibooks wireless is on and his imacs is, she should be able to see the printer

The problem is, he doesn't turn his computer on most of the time. Maybe once a week. His wife is the one that uses the computer the most and she is stuck downstairs because of illness. I think that is why this printer was given to them. I guess space requirements require it be upstairs. I'm not into second guessing why, I'm trying to answer his question.

well, they are all set if they both have wireless cards -- they can put the printer anywhere in the house...

If that printer works anything like the wireless HP all-in-one I bought for my girlfriend, then the easiest way to set it up is to have it connect via wireless to your router. This assumes you have a wireless router in the house somewhere. Once it's connected to the router, then all of the computers should have immediate access to the printer. At least in theory.
Using printer sharing via the USB hookup is an unnecessary step and will only complicate things. USB printer sharing requires the host computer be powered on to allow other computers access to the printer. Turn off the hardwired computer, no more access to printer. So skip it entirely .In theory, if one machine is using a USB hookup, the other machine should still be able to connect to the printer wirelessly.

I had suspected that all computers could connect wirelessly without a router but had no experience with "wireless Printers".
