Were it not for the moon, the earth's rotation would be much faster, resulting in more motion of the earth's molten core, which would in-turn generate a stronger magnetic field, deflecting more of the sun's particles and resulting in a lack of aurora borealis.

The moon's gravity produces a drag on the earth's rotation that will some day result in the earth's rotation being approximately that of the moon's orbital rate -- both will always show the same face to one another.

Some estimates place that result around 12 billion years from now... which is roughly 8 billion years beyond the time that it is estimated for our sun to turn into a red giant when its outer layers will engulf and destroy the earth, so it's really just a theoretical problem.
