Okay, so we've narrowed it down to:
42" Sony Bravia
42" LG
42" Toshiba Regza
All are 60hz, 1080p, and I know the Sony has a 2500:1 on-screen contrast ratio. LG is around 2000:1 and Toshiba's wasn't listed.
So, what would you buy?

Impossible to answer until you give us specific model numbers. Also, have you considered a plasma TV?

I'm more wondering about brand vs. brand and any negative or positive experiences with those three brands overall.

Sony's Bravia line has at least two or three levels reflecting features and price.

Consumer reports doesn't list LG or Toshiba favorably, as far as repairs. Tops are Sanyo, Sharp, Panasonic, Sony and Samsung, with Sanyo at the top and Sharp next, I think. This is based on surveys of members.

I have an LG 50" Plasma for over a year now, no issues.
Also have AOC Envision 32" LCD fathers day present in den/office
32" Hitachi LCD in bedroom.
Since you didnt list it. I dont have to steer you clear from Westinghouse LCDs.
My suggestion is to find the model number of each brand you are interested in and get a good look/hand on it in person, also read any online reviews you can find on the TV's. Assuming price is not an issue, most people tend to stick with what they typically buy. Some would say they only stick with BRAND X because of : customer service/ warranty service, x, y, z ..... etc..

I got a good deal on a 37" LG LCD a few years ago - liked it so much that I picked up another 37" and then a 32" as well. I am very satisfied with all three - HD looks great and even SD looks pretty good. In my experience, LG makes quality stuff...but of course, YMMV

What's the power use difference (in box 'on' and 'off' modes)?
What are the warranties like?
Do they have anti-reflective screens?
IMHO, the only current LCDs that come close to a plasma are the high-end Sony's, and they appear to be about the same price (but use half the energy and will probably last longer).
