some Question about iPod Touch 2nd Gen - space-time - 12-17-2008

first, I can spell it properly

then, I'd like to know if there are any VoIP application for it (it has a microphone and speaker, right?)

is it usable as a PDA? reminders, shopping lists, notes, etc. I know there are Apps for that, but it's hard to tell how easy or hard it is to use those unless you have a unit.

Finally, if you buy some Apps, can you keep the Apps ehn you upgrade the unit later on to a Gen 3 maybe? I know that with some cell phones you have to buy the games or wallpapers all over. I hope this is NOT the case with an iPod Touch.

Thanks

1. Yes, there are VoIP apps that will work for the 2nd gen iPod touch, but it does not have a built-in microphone. You either have to buy the iPhone headphones with microphone, or another 3rd party microphone.

2. Yes perfectly usable as a PDA, especially with select 3rd party apps

3. Yes, Apps are tied to your iTunes account, not the device. For example, when I upgraded from the orig iPhone to the iPhone 3G, all apps were loaded onto the new iPhone. Plus they also loaded on my son's iPod touch as he syncs with my iTunes.

Actually, my son also purchases music /apps using his iTunes login within the same iTunes library. We get each others applications without issue.

I, for one, thank you.

TruPhone:

Eminently useable as a PDA. There are hundreds of PDA apps for the touch platform, including the built-in ones.

Some don't like using the virtual keyboard but I do--combined with intelligent completion and other typing aids, I find text entry to be quite fast and accurate.

I believe one of the pieces still missing is the ability to create or edit Office documents but apparently, that's coming:

As far as I know, yes. I believe the situation will be similar to how it is now on the desktop, i.e. when the operating system is upgraded, you may have to upgrade some applications for compatibility reasons. In any case, you apparently have similar rights regarding "apps" for the touch platform as you do for applications on the desktop.

By the way, you can buy apps either via iTunes or directly on the iPhone/iPod touch. In either case, the apps will be synchronized in both directions. Therefore, if you buy a new iPhone/iPod touch, the apps should sync to it just as, for example, your music and videos would.

Thanks, Wife wishes a PDA for Christmas, and I think an iPod Tough would be a nice surprise. The only question left is size... 16 GB would be perfect, but my local Costco seems to have only 8 and 32 in stock. And they have a little lower prices than Apple, and a $20 INSTANT rebate (I think expires 12/21), so I need to hurry, and maybe drive to the other Costco to see if they have 16 GB in stock.

Best buy has a deal with a $50 gift card this week so you may want to look into that.
