Sounds to me like they don't want an Apple Store. Personally, if I was Apple I would abandon the plans and build stores elsewhere. Where people actually want an Apple Store for everything that it is.

Historic District Commissions have both the neighborhood and thier own existance to protect.
If they let Apple build an all glass out of period character building, you can bet WalMart would be there with someting unbelevievably garish and what would happen to the neighborhood then ?
Next would be a giant red Target building.
It's a challenge for Apple and the District Commission.
Apple ran into design problems with the Back Bay Architectural Commision with a store in Boston, too.
Haggling over fitting into the nuance of the neighborhood delayed building / opening for almost 2 years, iirc.

That's what I was thinking..along with "what does a diaper rash cream have to do with Apple?" When I think diaper, I think of Microsoft - products mostly full of poo.

I think that if their desitn actually consisted of a brick wall, they would have a better chance of getting approval.

Maybe they should use old fashioned hand rolled glass ... the wavy looking kind.

A spokeswoman for Apple declined to comment on the details of the issue, but said, “We’re excited to bring Apple stores to Georgetown.”
Someday I hope to be that articulate.

While I can understand Georgetown's concern, the B&N Bookstore has a lot of glass on both levels if memory serves. Depending where the store is to be located on M St, they might really be concerned that it would make it's neighbors look dumpy. While I enjoy Georgetown, there are buildings that are in desperate need of some attention.
