Craigslist: English butchering at its best/worst - decay - 03-10-2009 http://allentown.craigslist.org/ele/1067921344.html "But i have an iCraig that was 50 dollars when boughten which was two weeks ago." boughten? "It has the usual scraps and scuffs on the back other than tht its real nice. " And we wonder why the USA is falling behind in the world. Anyone else care to share your local CL language butchers? Feel free to link to labtops, or iPods with scrathes (or without), etc. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ele/1066956997.html http://southjersey.craigslist.org/sys/1063871896.html Re: Craigslist: English butchering at its best/worst - Racer X - 03-10-2009 I love the personals where they are trying to tell you how bright they are, and they want someone who is smart so they can be challenged, and its full of typos. Were it used in Connecticut, it would undoubtedly be seen as charming and proper, if not a bit stuffy. But yeah, you're right. The French have the right idea. Let's set up a government committee to decide what's official English, and what's not. Clearly, we're being dragged down by rural expressions that were introduced by nineteenth century immigrants. Re: Craigslist: English butchering at its best/worst - Black - 03-10-2009 Dutch influence, then. In germany, past perfect (= I have bought) is seen as common, while past imperfect (I bought) is more formal and stiff sounding, the opposite of english. Maybe the cl poster actually built the iCraig (bauten)? Re: Craigslist: English butchering at its best/worst - Lux Interior - 03-10-2009 Can you put that in the past plu-perfect anterior future tense? |
