PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - clay - 03-19-2006 I've put off getting a digital camera for a long time, now, and I'm starting to get a little antzy. My mom got one of the original digital rebels a couple of years ago, and we have a rebel xt here at work, and, while I really like the XT, I'd rather see if I can wait until whatever the next generation of camera is. I've been hesitant to jump on the bandwagon because I haven't felt like digital (at least pro-sumer) cams have quite arrived, but it seems like they finally have with cameras like the rebel xt. Now that I'm thinking like it may be time to purchase, I'd like to get something that will last me a long time. I'd love to get something in the 10-12MP range, but I don't really know if there's anything available in the current (or forthcoming) lineup of pro-sumer dSLR's. So....is there anything in the pipeline that is going to replace the XT, or....are there any amazing new technologies coming out within the next 6 months that I should simply hold off on buying something until that comes out? Just want to make sure I'm getting all the camera I can! your thoughts are welcome! Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - pRON aHOLIC - 03-20-2006 First off, buy if you need to is the old saying. The typical Rebel/XT and 10D/20D/30D is about 18 months. Though the 10D replaced the D60 a bit sooner the rest has remained consistent. That would put the XT up for replacement in late August with a Sept. shipping date. As for the 10-12mp issue, it is looking like the aps-c sized chips are getting pretty close to hitting the wall in terms of image quality vs. mp size. The 30D replaced the 20D and remained at 8mp. Some wondered if Canon chose to do that because they couldn't make 10-12mp aps-c sized chips. I suspect the real reason for remaining at 8mp is there will be a true in between camera above the 30D and below the 5D in August. Canon has indicated they will have 2 lines of camera, the aps-c and Full frame 35mm sized cameras. The aps-c will get a truly pro level camera to fill the void but they will wait until the FF cameras can be made cheaper. 8mp and very good ISo 1600 and ISo 3200 are great reasons to get into a closeout 20D or a 30D. There isn;t another camera right now for the money and new that can match the ISo 1600 and 3200 of the 20D/30D. It is plenty of resolution balanced against image quality because as pixel density goes up, so does the possibility of noise. The best value going right now would be the 20D as it comes down in price. Still a very good camera and the value will be outstanding. A few nice new things on the 30D but the 20D has been seen at $99 for the body and maybe less if you are quick on the Dell deals. The XT is also dropping in price due to other DSLR in that segment. I love the XT for the needs I have. I can shoot clean ISO 800 and 1600, shoot RAW plus high resolution jpgs and have a super compact an light dSLR without the bulk. Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - clay - 03-20-2006 thanks, pRON for the info. and advice. I don't really *need* a camera for anything--just for fun! So I can afford to wait a bit longer if that's what it'll take to get the next generation of cameras. The 20D is an attractive option as well, although that may be getting just a bit outside of the pricerange that I'd like to stick with for now (given that this is only just a hobby cam!). We'll see, though. It'll probably just come down to whatever deal I see first-whether it's an XT kit in the $700 range, or something else comparable. Like I said, I don't need anything right now, so if I don't get anything for 6 months, there's really no loss in my book. Thanks! Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - mjgkramer - 03-20-2006 I bought a 20D last year to replace my D30 and really like it. Dell is selling it for $1039 shipped plus tax through March 22. Here's a link to the deal on the other site. Coupon code is "9TQBRBD53RN8DJ". They only had 200 to sell at this price. http://dealmac.com/deals/Canon-EOS-20-D-8-2-MP-SLR-Digital-Camera-Body-for-1-039-shipped/113288.html Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - Ombligo - 03-20-2006 I'll second Pron on the 20D being the best bang for the buck. It will give you really nice images at all ISO settings. Stay with Canon though as Nikon offers junk at the same level. The only reason to go with Nikon is if you already have the lenses. What you do need to get past is waiting for the next great thing. Film cameras all worked essentially the same whether it was an original Leica M2 or the latest Nikon F6 - the shutter opened, exposed the film and closed. The true upgrade was in the film as they became finer grain and faster, but all were backward compatible. Digital is a whole different game. Whatever you buy today will be outdated in just 2-3 years. It is more akin to your computer than to a camera. Just as computers get to old to update effectively, cameras will not match up to the newest ones in just a few years. So buy what you will serve you today and be ready to replace it in the next year or two. Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - ScottG - 03-20-2006 Honestly, I have no idea when the XT replacement is going to be announced. However, I would say that as the proud owner of an XT, I cannot imagine what is going to come out that will significantly improve on them in the same price range. Now that the 30D has been announced, I would look at a 20D as they become more affordable, but more from the point of view of build quality than anything else. I use my XT to take all sorts of photos, from snapshots of my kids, to cityscapes, long exposures, photos of the kids where there is low light but I don't want to use the flash.... and it works brilliantly. Honestly, if I had the 20D would I take better photos? Unlikely. I would say that if you are thinking about it now, you should decide between the cameras now available in your price-range. Get the best deal, and enjoy. Next year's consumer dSLR will not be a quantum leap forward... (I guess) cheers scott Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - vision63 - 03-20-2006 The Rebel XT is a great camera as is the excellent 20D, but I wouldn't call the Nikon D70s and the D50 junk. They are excellent cameras as well. If you have no Canon lenses, then you'll need to either try to upgrade the kit lens or start saving for a better one. The Nikon D70's kit lens is a nice piece of work 18-70mm that can serve as a more than adequate walkaround lens. We're really spoiled these days with cameras. Even the lesser than DSLR's are great machines. I have one photographer that delivers me amazing images with his Olympus E-500. Re: PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out? - raz - 03-20-2006 I too am almost at the point where I'm ready to make the switch to digital. It's getting harder and harder to find a shop to deal with slide film, so I was figuring on retiring my beloved M4 kit and picking up an XT and one or two L lenses. Is the 20D worth the $400 premium over the XT? I'm not sure the 'build-quality' makes much difference if the camera will be obsolete in three years, and the electronics appear to be the same. Its a good time to go digital as the prices have come down drastically. > > Is the 20D worth the $400 premium over the XT? > I'm not sure the 'build-quality' makes much > difference if the camera will be obsolete in three > years, and the electronics appear to be the same. Depends on your needs. The 20D adds added grip size, ISO 3200 and 5 frames a second shooting. It also has a metal skeleton and IMO a better AF system. I like my XT for the very small size, it is SLR minus the bulk. When I need more grip I add the vertical grip accessory. If I had only one camera and $1k to spend on 1 body then it would be the 20D at it's closeout price and have money left over for lenses. The ISO 1600 and 3200 on the 20D and now 30D are still unmatched for the dollar. I would say the extra $400 is money well spent and minimizes the needs for a new camera just a bit longer. I know a few people that have moved past the Rebel/XT for the 20D now and they are very happy with the move up. The 20D has ISO 3200, a useable one at that, 5 frames a second shooting and a vertical grip option. Things to consider if those aspects appeal to you, especially of you are shooting low light action or performances. The 20D is a staple of weekend warrior parents shooting pics of their children in action. |
