Any experience with Alltel's "internet" package? - DaveS - 04-04-2009

I will soon begin traveling a lot and I am considering ridding myself of my land line and its associated DSL service. Since travel is more my concern that also means I am not considering a switch to cable or satellite. Rather I am looking at the cell phone providers for the internet service on my Mac Book.

Like Verizon, Alltel - and others - offer an internet "anywhere" package. There have been several Verizon threads but as of yet I have not seen anything about Alltel's or any other carrier's packages and their real life experience.

Any info would be appreciated.

NOT looking for information on their "data packages".

Thanks in advance.

DaveS

Alltel has been bought out by Verizon and the switch over
is suppose complete by fall. So you might want to go
Verizon.

I think Verizon is the one someone from this forum recommended a little over a year ago when my friend was looking for internet service while traveling throughout the country in her motorhome. She's been really happy with it. There have been a couple of places where she's been able to access the internet when she couldn't get cell phone service, and there have also been a couple of really remote areas where she couldn't use either. (She already had AT&T cell service so didn't switch that to Verizon.)

I am looking into Alltel and have just read they have a 5 GB per month lid on transmission.

Alpha,

I had recommended Sprint for wireless data services to you last year for your friend, and still do. Bigger, faster network.

A couple of hours after I posted this, I was thinking "I bet it was Sprint!!". I don't want to make any rash promises, but I really am going to try and remember the right provider name; this is the second time I've gotten it wrong and you've corrected me. But I have a better idea! I won't volunteer any information on this subject. Everybody will, I'm sure, be better off. Smile

All the wireless providers now have a 5GB monthly limit. I think AT&T and Verizon (and by proxy probably Alltel too) strictly enforces it. I'm not sure about Sprint though.

What does 5 GB translate to? Does it rule out downloading TV shows and Netflix movies or streaming radio?
