Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - Don Kiyoti - 04-08-2009 I have a sofa and a chair which I like a lot but they're getting a bit dog-eared. I will be getting quotes to reupholster them but I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with it. People keep warning me that it's more expensive than buying new furniture. I'm not interested in leather, just some kind of fabric similar to what's on there. The pieces originally came from Copenhagen. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - bazookaman - 04-08-2009 we had a nice old couch reupholstered. not only that but we had it re-webbed too. or whatever you call it...the guy redid the bottom that supports the cushions. did a SUPER job. We supplied the fabric but the cost was extremely well worth it and WAY less than buying a new couch. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - AAA - 04-08-2009 Funny. My home town upholsterer's name and biz name was Lambert. The post below has it in the title. Yours has Upholstery. Just kinda funny. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - dmann - 04-08-2009 I have done several pieces and my father is in the business. If the furniture is good quality, invest in reupholstering. If it is marginal or worse, don't bother. The fabric is only one component. There is a great deal of labor involved including replacing padding, strengthening framework, internal repairs and the like. I currently have a hand me down couch that is in pretty good shape but is ugly (IMHO.) It is decent, not great, quality but I like the overall look of it. I just need to decide if I should reupholster it or buy new. The cost will probably end up being about the same based on the fabric I want. DM Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - iaJim - 04-08-2009 Just had a sofa and a chair reupholstered. They did a great job, and we got two peices for the price of one. Veyr Pleaed. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - AlphaDog - 04-08-2009 The quotes I got were so high that I learned to reupholster my own furniture. If as, bazookaman says, the piece is of very good quality, the cost would be worth it. I've never had a piece I was willing to put more money into having reupolstered that what it would cost to replace. It's one of those projects that you have to understand, in advance, that you're paying the cost of reupolstery for reasons other than monetary. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - Robert M - 04-08-2009 Don, I recently purchased a table and four arrowback chairs for $75.00 off craigslist. The chairs had custom cushions on them. Since the cushions looked a bit worn and don't really match the decor of my kitchen, I decided to get the cushions reupholstered. I found a store that does it and they quoted me $50.00 for the work and stuffing plus the cost of one yard of fabric plus tax. The cost of the fabric ranged from about $9 or so for naugahyde to $30 for a very nice fabric. So, I expected each cushion to cost approximately $75 dollars if I chose a reasonably nice fabric for it. $75 per cushion. And, I saw a sample of their cushions. It was totally inappropriate for an everyday kitchen chair, i.e. flat and simple. It was more like the cushion you'd see on a formal dining room chair, i.e. thicker and more rounded in the center. At that price, I decided the original cushions are just fine. So, I would ask yourself, "How old is the couch and how much did i pay for it?", compare that to the cost of reupholstering it and then compare that to the cost of replacing your couch entirely. You'll know what to do by that point. Robert Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - DaviDC. - 04-08-2009 I inherited my grandfather's rocking chair that had been reupholstered in about 1966. About 30 years later it was time for it to be reupholstered again. I bought several yards of a very cool fabric & decided to tackle the job myself, which I soon realized was WAY beyond my skill level. I found a guy near where I worked who said he could finish the job. The price he quoted was reasonable & the pieces of furniture he had on hand seemed to have been well finished so I figured he would do a good job. The only explicit instruction I gave was that NO additional padding was to be added to the back; simply recover what's there because it fit me so well. The seat needed the straps re-tightened & more padding, but leave the back alone. He said he understood what I was talking about. While he worked on this, I refinished the wooden arms & glued one that was cracked. I couldn't believe it was the same chair when I went to pick it up because it was beautiful & looked so good. I loaded into the back of my truck & took it home & carted it up 2 flights of stairs & was horrified when I sat down in it. He had overstuffed the back & it no longer fit. So much padding had been added that my head wouldn't reach the headrest without bending my neck back. We squabbled over this for a day or two & I ended up giving the chair to a friend. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - dk62 - 04-08-2009 If done properly with quality materials, it can be as expensive as some new stuff, depending on amount of work. Think $1000 and up for sofa, $500 and up for chair. Re: Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered? - M>B> - 04-08-2009 My folks had two chairs done by a guy who did it after hours, he picked them up, showed them samples and took them away. Quite a while later they were finished, he said it would take some time. They look and feel great and the job was less than half of what others were quoting! Ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations. This can be a big move so act slowly. Also, older out of style or fabric in poor shape pieces in good condition pieces at yard sales or thrift shops can be customized and made like new with this renovation! |
