I finally ordered one!

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001NGOIJO/

This deal also appears on their Gold Box page for today, http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/

This will be a replacement for my aging stock 160GB SATA drives in my G5. Should be a decent improvement, especially since my boot drive only has 4GB free space left. I will probably keep one of the 160's in there as backup bootable drive, but maybe not.

I am tempted to buy two, but I figure I will be using less than half of the capacity on just one so having two doesn't really make sense. I won't need that much space for a while and by then the 2GB drives will be 8 cents per GB, hopefully less.

And yes I do have a backup drive, it's actually the exact same model 1TB 7200.11 in an external USB 2.0 case.

This isn't one of the ones affected by the bad firmware, is it?

UnDoug, I think that was just on 1.5TB drives.

Yes, I have changed. Prices for the 1.5 kept going up which meant more waiting, not what I was interested in doing. I also did not want to risk having to deal with firmware issues on the Seagate 1.5TB.

Just be prepared to have a Windows PC handy to flash them before use.

It was definitely 1T HDs (7200.11) that had some bad firmware, and some 1.5Ts as well.

I sit corrected; I'd only heard about the 1.5's.

The firmware bug hits drives 750GB and up.

Coming into the discussion late...

So is this a good choice in a standard (non-multidrive) setup, or should I steer clear?
