Help please, with dishwasher repair. - wurm - 04-08-2009

In reference to my previous thread here, there's good news and bad news.

The good news is that after pulling out the dishwasher to replace the heater element, I discovered one of the wires to the existing element was disconnected. So it may not need to be replaced after all.

The bad news is that I may have bought a replacement element for nothing. No biggie.

The other bad news is that I found a piece of the dishwasher on the floor when I pulled the unit out from under the cabinet. I can't see any obvious place that a piece is missing from, but then again, I don't know what I'm looking for.

So after enlisting your help identifying the piece in question (based on some imperfect pictures), I guess I'm wondering how important it is to put back on...wherever that may be. Any ideas what this thing is? It's about 2" long by about 1" wide at the widest point. No pressure, but until I get some opinions, the dishwasher will probably be sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor. I don't want to put it back and hook electric and water up until I know whether I need...or don't need...this piece in question. Thanks.

This is a job for.... http://www.samuraiappliancerepairman.com/ !

Go to his site and click on "parts". Then use their search engine to find that part based on its size. You should be able to find it and get a description.

Nice clean floor.

It would have gotten lost with all the other spare parts (and last night's culinary experimentations) on mine.

Don't rule out the possibility that this part may not be needed. It looks as if it might have been used to keep the drum from spinning during shipping and may not be an actual component.

At least, my memory tells me it looks similar to something that came with my washing machine from several years back.

You can search for the part by the part size and material. You enter the make and model and start narrowing it down.

Thanks, all. I just checked the Sears partsdirect site and found an exploded view. It looks like it's the part numbered 15 in this view http://tinyurl.com/dhqsun, but I can't tell from the picture where it should go. At $16.21 and being called a Tab, Sump, I'm getting a sense that it's kind of important. I'd love to be convinced otherwise, though.

Aha! I tipped the dishwasher on its front and noticed two similar lookng pieces and a hole where this one goes. Success! (or at least I think so). I'll know more when I get everything all hooked back up..after I have a little lunch.

Thanks for your indulgence.

After all this, I still may have to call a plumber. Grrrrr. I think I may have striped the compression fitting when disconnecting the water.

Uh oh! You're going to come up against one of the mechanics/plumbers/electricians laws:

Standard Labor Rate: $100/hr
If you watch: $150/hr
If you help: $200/hr
If you tried to fix it before calling: $300/hr
