Is this AE card N speed? 2006 iMac Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87) - olnacl - 04-09-2009
The DL speed (downloaded a couple 155 MB files) is about half that of a MBP (late 2007) on th same wireless network, right near the router and though it's showing a measly 500 kbps DL speed running Speed Test, the speed matches the MBP when I connect the iMac by ethernet cable (35 KB/sec vs 80 KB/sec)
Router is set for 802.11n (802.11b, g compatible). I googled and didn't find anything definitive.
AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9)
Current Wireless Network: Apple Network 8a2876
Wireless Channel: 2

n isnt necessary, not even g really -- unless you have cable or FiOS -- you should be getting full speed downloads
have you tried a new user?

What channels are you using? If you are using channel 1 for both G and N, the speeds on G can suffer if there is any N traffic.

After playing around some more it must be n capable. I reset the Airport Extreme to Wireless n only and wireless download rate went up to the same as I was getting on the MBP (same file - same source) - was previously set as 802.11b, g compatible, now 802.11n only.
Only issue is if my friend wants to let visitors share her wireless connection and their cards are not n compatible. She's not one to muck around with network setting except by accident.
