The Day the Earth Stood Still - 2008 - AAA - 04-10-2009

I won't talk spoilers. But it was not what I expected. I was hoping for more of an update to the original. I think it took a different path. Similar, but not the same.

Any opinions?

the original DTESS is my brother's all time favorite movie. (why? - i don't know but it is what it is.)

he was really looking forward to the remake and was sorely disappointed.
In the original the aliens had to deal with Earth because we could be a threat to their civilization with rockets & atomic bombs.
In the remake they wanted to save Earth from humans because only a handfull of planets in the galaxy can support complex life.
I can't decide which is harder to swallow, but at least the SFX were better in the new film.
And I liked how they already had spies living among us.
I have a long time affinity for the original, liking it better than most other sci-fi movies. I must have been around 7 when I first saw it (10 cents!) and what probably grabbed my attention was more an identification for the boy.

I wonder how many others like the original better because of this kind of identification more than the actual dynamics of either movie?
