Easiest Dell mini 9 upgrade so far (seriously) - DaviDC. - 04-11-2009

The 32GB SSD arrived today (from Memphis to Cincinnati to Atlanta to Bham) so I installed Leopard.

I made an install USB thumb drive using an 8GB drive from a 10.5 disk image. I never could get a bootable DellEFI thumb drive working so I used an install CD with the thumb drive plugged into one of the pass through ports on the double ended USB cable.

After booting from the CD, it found the USB drive immediately & installed in about half the time that it takes using the Leopard DVD. Updated to 10.5.6 from a disk image on another thumb drive, ran DellEFI & then Monolingual. Software Update is now installing 5 items then I'll be good to go.

I'm interested to see how this 32GB Super-Talent SSD compares to the 32GB RunCore in my original Dell Mac mini 9.

Read speeds are pretty comparable but the Runcore has faster write speeds.

I've got some questions, my mini9 arrived today. Nice dark rich cherry finish. Seems like a good place to ask.

Where are you'all buying your RAM?

What is the biggest external monitor its reasonable to drive out of that VGA port with the 8MB video memory. Any recommendations?

Alternative sources for SSD cards? You didn't just give one for the Super-Talent.

You can find RAM for a decent price at newegg.com.

I don't believe the Mini has 8 megs of video RAM. It is an integrated graphics chipset not dedicated VRAM.

Just about everything you need to know is here...

Use coupon code EMCLRLV37 [Exp 4/13] = $84 with free shipping. Features a read speed of 40MB/s and a write speed of 15MB/s.

I have one on order as well as a RunCore (which likely won't get to me for another few weeks. DaviDC, I'm very curious about your impressions of the Super Talent vs the RunCore.

How is the speed compared to stock dell card?

What version if is the BIOS on the ones you have been getting?

The one I have is A00, any reason to upgrade?

I have searched the site over at mydellmini but the vast amount of info is overwhelming.

but the vast amount of info is overwhelming.

That's my quandary. I found the same problem at cubeowner.com and a few similar sights.

Finding questions that elicit the info needed in a manner that makes sense can be pretty tough. Asking a question already asked as such sites is a far greater sin that doing so here.

I've yet to start my Mini-to-Leopard conversion, so I'll be taking my 'Phone and Ubuntu on a quick trip this coming week.

Maybe I'll be Leopardized before the next one.

why do people buy the cheapest mini9 and then pimp it out? Why not just buy the right one in the first place?
