Netbooks at a local Starbucks
Hi everyone,
Just came back from a local Starbucks. I hate their coffee but love their Signature Hot Chocolate. It's a cold, rainy craptacular day, and a dose of Starbucks Signature Hot Chocolate was in order. As I waited for one of the staff to make my hot chocolate, I couldn't help but observe a slew of people tapping away on their notebook computers. Ten to be exact.
One of the ten had a full size laptop. It was a 17" MacBook Pro. No mistaking it even from a distance. Of the rest, eight had netbooks and one had a 12" Ibook G4. Again, it was impossible to mistake the netbooks for a larger notebook computer and there was no mistaking the 12" Ibook.
They all seemed to be very happy with their computers and those with netbooks appeared to have no trouble whatsoever slaving away at the keyboards. It almost makes me want to buy a Dell Mini 9 to replace my Winbook craptop even though I don't need a new notebook computer right now. It'd just be nice to have a very small laptop that can run OS X.

Long Island, NY. They claim it's in the low 40s but even if that's true, it feels like it's in the 30s. Add in heavy at times rain and lots of wind and it's definitely a hot chocolate evening.

Hard to imagine drinking coffee here at 4:42 and 92 f-ing degrees!
Remarkable sample of computers there... 20% apples, 80% sub compacts - seems to be the state of the marketplace these days.

bet 1/2 of those keystrokes you're seeing are hitting the DELETE key.

Nopes. IM'ing, browsing the web and typing e-mail. Seemed as if it was business as usual. If I wasn't in a rush to get home - I hate Starbucks - I'd've asked to play with one of the netbooks.

More like a blustery fall day here.
The Mini 9 would be perfect for surfing the web out in public. Small footprint. Large enough screen to actually read comfortably.

I want to know more about this technique, about how you looked into their soul to find they were happy. That would be a useful thing to know, from 20-50 feet away, with complete strangers, in a busy public place.
You mean they weren't cursing, crying, or sighing? Absence of visible suffering qualifies as happiness? I need to reconsider my observational powers, and learn some of these perception techniques!
