Amazing emergency landing video (I give it a 10!) - OWC Jamie - 04-22-2009

Major props (no pun intended) to the pilot on this one!

WINTER HAVEN, FL -- Two men in a home-built airplane survived a brush with death Sunday when they landed their plane on Havendale Boulevard.

22-year-old pilot Kyle Davis and passenger Joe Surowiec were flying the plane for a friend to the Lakeland Sun n' Fun Fly-In from Winter Haven when the engine failed.

The event was captured by two cameras, one in the cockpit and the other facing the engine.

When the engine failed, Davis quickly begins looking for a place to land. The two men look at a number of fields, but determine that they are unable to land in those locations.

Instead, the men decide to land in the road, where cars and businesses can be seen passing by.

Deputies were called to the scene, but had little to do since no there was no damage or injuries involved.

Both Davis and Surowiec denied on-scene medical attention.

That's frakkin great! Man, for an amateur pilot (assumption on my part) that's hella instinct and decision making, especially when he hasn't trained for that situation. Good pilots are always expecting the worst and planning ahead of time. It requires a good feel (gained from experience) of the airplane's performance limits to pull something like that off. I remember going up with my cousin a year or so ago (we were in a Cessna 172) and always being on the lookout for an emergency landing spot, in addition to flying the airplane and navigating (he was the licensed pilot...I just happened to be 'driving').

"What the wing...watch the wing!" lol...after all of that, that would be the last thing I would be vocally concerned about.

Great landing though...smooth and the pilot was very calm - hard to truly tell if it was a desperate situation or a staged landing to be honest (low on gas...conserving it for the land)?

Not found an article to go with it yet.

Edit - see initial post, found it.

You can't get anywhere near a pilot's license without practicing emergency landings. Although you don't actually make the landing in a field or whatever, you are taught how to prepare and look for a suitable landing spot.

Sure, but I had the feeling he was in a new airplane (other than the one he got his license in)

As Allgold indicated, that is the primary emergency that is trained for when getting a pilot's license, because it is not uncommon. The unusual thing is that there were cameras.

They were going to the Sun-n-Fun flyin at the Lakeland Airport. It is a huge experimental and homebuilt plane gathering, second only to the EAA event in Oshkosh, WI. Every year there are crashes and emergency landing associated with the flyin.

Job #1: Get the aircraft down safely

Job #2: Avoid further damage to aircraft. Even a light "bump" can result in $10,000.+ damage. Pilot was landing "off airport". Extra care needed because hazards are present that would not be present at an airport. Fuel is typically carried in the wings. Damage to wings could result in fuel leak and fire.
