How to Make a Long Vowel Symbol? - abpanman - 03-22-2006

I need to include a pronunciation for: "SHALOM" (shä-lom´) I need to add the dash above the o in the second syllable. Do I need a special font to do this?

Ō
unicode: 014C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode
UTF8: C5 8C

Option+e, release, then type "o" (without quotes)

õ

Option+N, release, then type O is closer... but not quite...

I looked through all the option-keys, and nothing that I found makes a straight line over a letter as a standard keyboard option.

Maybe Option-Shift or Option-cmd or some combination thereof might have better results.

Tried Option+N above and it's not quite correct. Neither is option+e. The unicode seems to be way to truly get the symbol I want but dang if I can figure out how to generate it.

If you are just looking to type it then go to your character palette under the american flag. Then goto:
European Scripts > Latin then its down there with the other o sounds when I paste it in here it gives me: Ō

Thanks Tats, that would work but I found out the app (Finale) I'm trying to put this in doesn't accept it. You can also generate the the long symbol by activating the US extended keyboard from the system preferences and then type option+a.

That mark (the macron) actually exists, and would be very useful to people who teach Latin or need to indicate pronunciation, but for no reason that I can fathom, it isn't a dead key, so you can't get it to land over a vowel, which is the only place you'd want it. I actually modifed a couple of type faces years ago, replacing the circumflex with the macron. This was strictly for Latin text, where the circumflex would not be needed.

It's the shift-option-comma key.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Its short vowel friend is right next door on the period key.
