PhPBB or alternative? - Mac-A-Matic - 03-22-2006

Was interested in hosting a chat room on my work webserver. It's small and limited and running OSX10.3 Panther for a small website. I was looking over phpBB and that seems to be a Win app. Can this be run on OSX? Or is there a Mac alternative?

Thanks!

How about Phorum?

(Disclaimer: I know nothin' 'bout bulletin board software... just know I like the way Phorum looks and operates...)

It looks like phpBB is for any major operating system. You need PHP running with your web server and a compatible database. You should be fine on OS X 10.3.

You have other options too.

The free software that runs this forum should work too. It is called phorum. It also requires a database configured with your web server.

I use a free Perl-based solution that doesn't require a database or PHP. It is called YaBB.

I use Phorum, I like it, fast and simple.

There's a nice standalone application for OSX, an alternative to the built in apache server, it's called MAMP I believe, it has an Apache server, and MySQL server in one.

I like phpBB. Easy to customize, lots of skins available too.

You can also look at SMF.

It is the package that GoDaddy.com hosting will install for you. It is free and uses PHP and MySQL. I have no experience using it.
