DVD player - speedymac - 03-23-2006

Hi I seem to be having many issues w/ my mac. There has to be a simple answer to all my macs problems, right?? Problem is figuring it out.

My DVD player is not reading my DVD's.
When I insert one my mac reads the disc as blank, then asks me what I want to do with it. I've tried opening the dvd player, the finder, and some other apps but none the less, I can't play a DVD.

Any suggestions?

TY

What do you mean "my DVD's"? Are these commercial store bought movies, or home made DVDs?

Re: DVD player - MacMagus - 03-23-2006

Model? OS? Type(s) of DVD's? Material on the DVD's? If burnt, how? What about CD's?

Re: DVD player - speedymac - 03-23-2006

store bought dvd's. iMac, OS 10.3.9,
Just tried a mac addict disc and it was spit right out, twice.
Uh-oh, I am realizing that this isn't a problem w/ the dvd player.
I tried a cd and it was ejected automatically within a minute or so.
Is my problem the disk drive entirely?

Thanks for your patients...

heh, patients... (i think you meant patience)

anyway, it sounds like the entire drive is done busted.
If it's still under warranty that will be covered, otherwise you are looking at 200+ to fix, depending on the model. Is it a G3, G4, G5?

Patience ... You got me... LOL...
G4. I'll be on my own with this one. So about$200, you think? The Apple store pro's will install it, right?
If/when I do replace my drive my burning probs will be taken care of too, huh?

Re: DVD player - speedymac - 03-23-2006

woops you said fix. So your saying they may repair it? Do you know what a new one would cost?

Re: DVD player - mikebw - 03-23-2006

Well by fix I meant replace the broken drive with a new one from apple. I don't know the prices for the G4 iMacs, but with the G3's a replacement drive would run about $180 plus labor, usually 50 to $100 depending on the shop. The apple store, or any of their authorized repair centers are the way to go. You might want to avoid CompUSA...

I believe the drive in the G4 iMacs is just a full-size 5.25" optical drive, so if you were feeling adventerous you might even be able to replace it yourself with some research, but then we can't be totally sure what the problem is until you open it up and start swapping out parts.

G4 iMac, yes, take to an Apple repair center.
(or authorized repair center you trust)

$50 for a new superdrive if you buy it yourself.

A cheaper option might be to buy a drive and install it in a firewire/usb2 case. It can then go with you to your next computer. Just something to keep in mind.
