Protein powder smoothie mix recommendations? - pinkoos - 03-23-2006

Along the same lines of Spearmint's thread from yesterday (http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/68153/68153#msg-68153), do people have any recs for good (health-wise and flavor-wise) protein powder smoothie mixes?

When I walk into places like GNC, Central Market, Whole Foods, Smoothie King, etc., I just get thoroughly confused by all of the offerings.

I just want a tasty, high protein, low carb smoothie mix that I can throw into the blender, add ice/milk/whatever, blend and go.

Anybody?

I have always used plain flavored soy protein from Trader's Joe.

I like Spirutein banana.
I blend it with a banana + frozen blueberries or cherries, mostly. Sometimes fresh fruit as well.
I have to special order it now, since my Whole Foods no longer carries it in favor of some house brand.
I tried their house brand (and others) and hated them all.
So now I order Spirutein from the market up the street.
You can also order it thru Amazon, which I did once before I found out I could get it locally.

I've been looking for a protein powder I can use. However, all of them I've seen contain soy. I'm allergic to soy (get very ill). Any idea if there is a protein powder without soy?

Muscle Milk is good. Myoplex is good.

Thanks, will look into some of the mentioned options.

The best stuff is Whey or Egg White protein. Other milk-based protein powders contain casein, which is a lower quality protein, and also is something many people react to badly.

And use a blender, with a little water and a frozen banana-amazing! (peel bananas before freezing). Maybe add a little vanilla and sugar, frozen berries, or jam.

Just make sure that the powder is 100% whey concentrate or isolate, or egg white. Everything else is much less good.

Blender is clearly the way to go.

I like spirutein vanilla. You can add any kind of flavoring to it. Any fruit or chocolate.

If you have CVS pharmacies where you live they are closing out Body Fortress brand vanilla whey protein powder for $3.87 per 2 lb can which is 75% off.
