Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - Harbourmaster - 03-23-2006 I need to buy a P&S type digital camera for my Teacher/Wife to use in her classroom at school. The three main criteria are that it be small, easy to use, take nice pictures under the flourescent lights and ideally it will be under $200 (so she isn't so worried about it running off on it's own). 4 - 4 The four main criteria are... oh nevermind... I would also like it if the camera had at least a 3x zoom lens, used CF memory (since I already have plenty) as well as AA batteries but these are seconday to the previously stated requirements. All that being said I'd like to know what you guys/gals carry around with you and why. Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - tahoedrew - 03-23-2006 Sony P-150 for me - love it! (except the flash can be a little on the weak side in dark areas if not taking a 2-6 person photo, zoomed in.) ~A Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - DaviDC. - 03-23-2006 I've got a Sony Cyber-shot DCS-W1 & LOVE it. It has a 2.5" display & takes 2 AA batteries that I've yet to run down while shooting photos (video is another story). Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - rgG - 03-23-2006 It is really hard to find a newer small digital that uses CF cards. I looked before I bought my daughter one because I too already had CF cards. I bought my daughter a fuji finepix 345 that is 4.1 mp. She likes it, but I haven't used it enough to give a review. It is usually $125 or less when you can find a deal. I got hers at Buy.com when it was on sale and I had a coupon. I just bought myself the cheapo hp M307 that CompUSA had on sale for $59 last week. It is a 3.2 MP and that really is plenty good enough for most things. It has a 3X optical zoom and 5X digital zoom. I like it OK, but I haven't had it but a few days. I wanted a lighter backup for my old Epson. Geeks.com has a good bundle on sale. The link is below. This was posted a week or so back. It is the Polaroid PDC 5080 5.1 MP camera. It has 4X zoom, but I think it is only digital, no optical, if that matters. I couldn't find out much about the camera, but for $89 with the extras of a 256MB card and a case and a tripod, and batteries, and a card reader, how wrong can you go. Use code: GEEK5080 after you put it in your cart to get the extras. It should show you the details of the free bundle. I almost bought this one just before they had the $59 one at CompUSA. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=PDC5080&cm_mmc=geekmail-_-daily_html-_-20mar06_GEEK5080-extended-_-GEEK5080-extendedMain HTH Oh yes, they have the Canon A520 on clearance at Target, YMMV, for $148 at my store. Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - SteveJobs - 03-23-2006 What's in my pocket? An undisclosed caliber. Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - Mike Johnson - 03-24-2006 Canon s-200. I'm a big fan of the small form factor, and also Canon's UI. While I would like to have a nice high-end camera, that'd be a luxury. A small camera that slips in the pocket of my jeans is a nearly a necessity. And since I bought mine, the cameras have gotten even smaller, better, and cheaper. I'd much rather have a small camera which takes decent shots than a big camera which gets left behind. Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - sscutchen - 03-24-2006 My Dad bought my Brother a camera for Christmas, and I picked it out. We were looking for small form factor and best value. We bought a Canon Powershot SD400 5MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom from Amazon. ![]() $285. Uses SD cards, tho. 3.5 x 2.1 x 0.8 inches ; 8.0 ounces Enhanced movie mode with fast 60-frame-per-second capture rate DIGIC II Image Processor provides fast, accurate image processing Powered by rechargeable Lithium-ion battery; stores images on SD memory card 5-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 13 x 17-inch prints 3x optical zoom; 2.0-inch LCD display; ultra-compact design (.8 inches thick) Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - jimbrady - 03-24-2006 I think the Canon A610, A 640?, A-anything with a high number, is bulletproof, takes CF cards, had a tilt/swivel screen (huge plus for me, maybe not as much for kids) and is in the price range (w/DELL coupons). Haven't used 'em, but I'd trust 'em. Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - bfd - 03-24-2006 …although it's a little out of your initial price range ($259) the value is outstanding. Takes CF cards, uses 4AAs. captures stills at 3.2MP and 640 x 480 video at 30FPS. The image stabilization feature and the 10x optical zoom are probably what pushes this past the other cameras mentioned here (which are all nice ones, by the way). You really have to work hard to take a "Bad Picture" … The S1 IS is now succeeded by the S2 and very shortly the S3, so this could be a last opportunity to buy a new one. Seems like it'd be perfect for a classroom with both still and video capture. Since it's a digital camera, the stills are perfect, even at "automatic". The video capability doesn't replace a digital video camera, but for "everyday events" that might just be played back on the computer or an attached screen, it's more than enough. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001G6U52/104-9314949-2162323?v=glance&n=502394 ![]() Re: Point & Shoot Digital Cameras...What's in your pocket? - blooz - 03-24-2006 I have a canon A520, 4 mp, 4x optical zoom. It was on sale for 159 at dell, ended up buying a256mb card from staples for it, another 40 bucks. Takes very good pictures. |
