Talking w/ a friend just yesterday about this. For $99 (a deal), I didn't need it. For $60, I shouldn't live w/o it.

How would this TomTom compare to the Garmin 260W ($130 deliv, refurb)?

I've never used one of these things, so ease of use would be my first concern- eg, inputting a new destination while on the road.

I see the Garmin has a larger screen, text-to-speech, probably longer batt life...
Some think the TomTom has more accurate last-block-to-go directions?

Seems none of the less costly ones come w/home ac charger, do they charge when plugged into the mac usb?

-another interesting looking option for $10/mo if you have the right gps-enabled phone (I don't).

I have a Garmin without text-to-speech and one with text-to-speech (260). I really like that option, but it does have one downside--when I use the text-to-speech one, I find myself more likely to look for street signs in a downtown area where there are short blocks. With the "turn in 50 yards" one, I just turn in 50 yards without worrying about the road names. It's probably safer for me to use the one with the turn by turn directions rather than the text-to-speech one. Having said that, I really like to hear the names of roads. If I was going to get another one, it would be a text-to-speech. I find them very easy to use; I didn't need instructions to be able to use them.

I find the Garmins to be very accurate 99% of the time (I just made that number up...). Of course, that last percentage can be irritating if it sends you down some path that isn't going to get you where you want to go. The bigger problem than basic directions, for me, is an out of date POI list. Given the millions of data points, it's not a surprise that there are things on the list that don't exist and vice versa. I generally have perspective and figure that the machine makes my life much easier than not. Still, I will sometimes print out a Yahoo or Google map and bring it along if I am using the Garmin to get someplace new. I rarely need the printout.

I have mine plugged into the lighter in the car, so the issue of charging at the house is not relevant. I haven't hooked either up to my computer since I first got them and downloaded whatever the appropriate updates were. I do think they charge when hooked up to the computer, but I wouldn't swear to it.
