GM Bankruptcy - Is my warranty gone? - JPK - 06-01-2009
I know the cars in the last couple of months have their warranty backed by the government (insert joke here), but does this bankruptcy mean the balance of my 3/36 on my Chevy truck is kaput?
I will save my general complaining about this news for the other Forum.

chapter 11 shouldn't affect your warrantees nor loans thru GMAC.

I thought the government was taking over the warranties. You will have to take your vehicles to the Post Office to get them fixed now. Not to worry.

Just don't tell them you want the repairs completed Parcel Post--I hear that takes forever. If you can, try to fit the car into a flat-rate Priority envelope, and you should get it back in 2-3 days.

A: Yes, and extended warranties as well, says Steve Harris, General Motors' vice president of global communications. In addition to the company's backing, they have the federal government standing behind them. The government's Warranty Commitment Plan was announced in March to reassure buyers of General Motors and Chrysler vehicles that warranty claims would be honored during the companies' restructuring.

I know that has been said, but it was my understanding this was point forward for new cars purchased as of a couple of months ago. I have seen nothing that states what happens to say a two year old car with 15k miles left to 36k?

The way questions about warranties is worded in most of the articles, the reference is to "cars owned or purchased." That's not particularly specific, but the intent seems to be assuring that all warranties will be honored, regardless of when the car was bought. Think of it this way: With the goal being to rebuild these companies, both GM and Chrysler, why would they do anything to burn owners of cars sold before the bankruptcy? They are going to have to keep selling cars, and that simply won't happen if warranties on cars are not honored, even if they were purchased prior to the proceedings. I mean, these people may be kind of dumb, but they aren't stupid.

I can't imagine who would continue making payments on a car if the warranty were no longer honored.

For starters, anybody who borrowed money for a car from a bank or a finance company. Which is to say, almost everybody who's borrowed money to buy a car.
