Question about 19" LCD display quality - Numo - 03-25-2006

I recently bought a LCD monitor that has beautiful color and brightness. I am running it at its max resolution: 1280 x 1024.

I like the display, but I have noticed that smoothed black text looks a little "colored." By that, I mean that I can see faint edges of color in certain parts of the letterform. Viewed from a normal distance, the type looks slightly multicolored. If it were a CRT monitor, I would say that the guns were slightly out of alignment. Another thing I noticed is that the weight of smoothed text on screen looks heavier than it should; regular weight fonts look sort of demi-bold. Of course, I could turn off text smoothing, but the text doesn't look very realistic this way, either.

These things are starting to bother me, because I don't know if they are normal or not for a 1280 x 1024 desktop on a 19" LCD.

Any opinions about this?

I hear all the time here that the 19" has the same resolution as 17" which on a bigger screen is not going to be as crisp. Bigger than 19" you are looking at better than 19"usually.

I checked out the Apple displays at CompUSA, and they look great.

I think the difference is that the Apple LCDs are able to display higher res desktops, so although everything is smaller, it appears very sharp. My dislpay is limited to 1280 x 1024. Bummer.

That said, does anyone have a 1280 x 1024 desktop on a 19" LCD that looks as good as a Apple LCD?

What is your Font Smoothing Style set to? I don't like it oversmooth (aka blurry) myself, so I just leave it set to "Light" and have no complaints on my own 19" LCD (Planar PX191).

But yeah, in general having the smaller pixels/higher resolution is a good thing. When OSes become truly resolution-independent (Leopard, please?), it will be a great thing.
