Bad Batteries??? - Buzz - 03-26-2006

I bought a 10 pack of 2000mAh NiMh AA's at Fry's last fall for Baby Buzz's soccer season photo use, and rotated 4 of the 10 into the lineup, where they took a charge, but were admittedly weak performers for the three or four cycles that they lasted. I tried the others the last couple of days, but they won't take a charge at all to start with. They appeared to be fresh stock when I bought them, so I'm curious if others have gotten bad rechargable batteries, and if there is a way to tell in advance to avoid repitition...?
Thanks,

Buzz

So the other 6 in the lineup are working fine?

I have. I got two bad batteries out of 12, but I bought them at Big Lots. The other 10 have performed like champs.

Nope. In order to evaluate them they should go through at least one full charge-discharge-full charge cycle.

How have you stored the batteries since last fall?

I bought a 12 pack of 2100 mah Japanese made Sanyo's on eBay a year or so ago and haven't had a failure yet. I paid about $1.50-$2.00 a cell IIRC.

charger[s] all ok- use three, all work w/ all other sets of batts

actually after 1st four went bad, tried four more that were no-go, remaining two not tried... seems like bad batch

batts stored in camera bag (1st set) or cabinet in office (remaining six from original 10 pack) no temperature or humidity extremes

also have a dozen Sanyo 2500mAh's w/ no probs and dozen Panasonic 2300mAh's w/ no probs, and few other Fry's sale batts w/ no probs... between kids, cameras, flashlights and cordless mice, the AA's get a workout, I'm bummed that Fry's had a bad batch, and wonder how many in the whole lot were bad. $9 for the 10 pack; I'll throw 'em in the van, and next time through, if the bitch line isn't too long, I'll say something.

The problem with buying batteries is you do not know how long they have been sitting around. After two years even with no use they are junk. I have bought two batteries for my cell phone and neither was worth a dmn. Fry's is a huge organization and they may have been in the warehouse for quite a while.

what? you never checked the date codes?

Re: Bad Batteries??? - Grateful11 - 03-26-2006

I've been using Energizers 1700's for about 3 years and 2300's
for about a year now and haven't had a failure. I have
enough that I usually only charge them in my slow 15 hour
charger which I believe is much easier on them. My 1 hour
charger gets them too hot to handle. As far as sitting around
and going bad, I only buy them at the god awful Sam's Club so
I don't have to worry about them being 2 years old. We have
about 2 dozen in use around the house.
