Oh nooo! MacPro going to the Genius Bar tomorrow - GeneL - 06-11-2009

I'm finally gathering my meager physical resources (bad back, bad knees and bad neck) and taking my Macpro to the Apple Store.

I've had a number of issues over a long period of time, but nothing so bad that the tremendous effort to get my computer down to the car from our second story condo seemed worth it. Till now, that is…

…it's mostly been issues with my mouse and keyboard. Both have had intermittent periods where they didn't respond properly, the keyboard didn't type into text windows and the mouse wouldn't move or if it did, it wouldn't click or it would move in jumps, as if on a surface that it couldn't see.

I'd "play around" and get them working again, but after a while the problems would crop up again.

The other day, the cradle for my Treo, which both charges and syncs stopped working and after playing around with it I discovered that if I changed the USB ports around it would work. also when my mouse Logitech mouse stopped responding I tried the same fix and it worked again.

Way back, when I first got the MacPro I had a problem with it recognizing my camcorder when I plugged it into the FW port on the front of the computer to download some video. I ignored that problem, since I rarely do video these days, but now with all these other problems with the USB ports, I felt compelled to do something before my Applecare runs out.

If I don't fall down the steps with it, I'll post the results when I get it back home.

Funny though, it was problems with the ports on my G5 that got me the MacPro. I swear that I didn't do anything to cause this.

But, as I always say, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong." Sad

PS, any thoughts on "going to the Genius Bar?" Should I worry about them having access to all my "stuff?" Do you do anything to your computer before you leave it for service?

TIA, GeneL

They're not interested in your stuff, so unless you're doing something illegal, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you had AppleCare you get free onsite coverage. Might be worth whatever Applecare costs to have a tech come out to your house and fix it on the spot.

I have Applecare, but in the past they have resisted coming out, even though I am considered disabled.

Based on the port problems with the G5, I figured that it probably was best that they had my MacPro in to work on???

Thanks for your thoughts,

Is it that you are changing USB ports or that you are simply unplugging and then plugging the devices back in? Would the same thing happen if you didn't switch ports?

What about using a different keyboard & mouse?

I am going to guess they run a hardware test and find nothing wrong. You should save yourself the trouble of moving it for now and try testing all this with a new user.

I assume you back up your data.

Though they may not be interested in your data, I read that some people were unexpectedly greeted with a freshly wiped drive sporting an equally fresh OS Install as part of the R&R/troubleshooting procedure.

I don't think such action is unwarranted in the relentless pursuit of perfection, so it's something you should consider.

Mike, I did try alternate ports with differing results. That's what tipped me that they were a problem. Tried different mouse and keyboard and still had a problem. Because the problems with mouse and keyboard were intermittent, I couldn't really do much with another user login, since the problems wouldn't always show up.

RAMd®d, I do backup every day. Thanks!

If you have a backup and you are worried about your data, then verify that your backup is good and do a clean install on the MP.

I was going to do that on my MBP, but since I had no video, I couldn't. So I just deleted all the data files before taking it in.

Thanks, LI.

I might just do that, plus also remove the two older HDs that I'm not actually using.

I have to say that it is a little scary to erase all of my data. Hmm, it also might affect the diagnosis if there's a problem with something on my HD???

Maybe I'll just take a chance.

Thanks for your thoughts, Lux Interior.Smile

If you're scared, it means you're not that confident in your BU!

Anyway, it's best to give it to them in original condition (RAM, hard drive, etc) if you can. That prevents a lazy tech from just dismissing it as a conflict with "non-supported" parts.

And maybe that IS the problem! You may save yourself a trip!
