i have a usb2 external drive hooked up to my dual core powermac g5 running 10.4.4. i use it for backing up to. all was going good but it doesn't show up anymore on the desktop. so i opened up disk utility and it showed up there but greyed out. i tried repairing permisions from boot hd and from os dvd. i also tried disk warrior. both of them said the disk was too severly damaged and cannot be repaired. i tried to erase it from disk utlity and from the os dvd and both result in spinning beachball and no response. anyone have any advice here? the hd and enclosure are maybe a month old.

What brand is it? Do you have access to a PC?
HD manufacturers usually have utilities to check their hard drives. Go the HD manufacturers website to see if they have a utility for your drive. Unfortunately, these utilities usually only work on PCs.
