Trouble syncing Palm Treo w/Palm Desktop - AlphaDog - 07-23-2009
My friend gave me a Treo she no longer needed, but all I got was the hardware - the PDA, the charger, and the USB cable. According to a number printed on the back of the PDA itself, it looks like the model number is 700FX, but I can't find anything about a model by that number; the closest I can find is a 700WX, but that one is also a phone.
Anyhoo - here I am, unable to sync it. It appears to work, but none of the information contained in my Palm desktop software (version 4.2.1) will transfer to the Treo. It goes through the motions, and then it gives a message saying there was an error and not all of my information was transferred. That part is right! I get no contacts nor calendar info, although a silly To-Do list with four items does get moved!
Since I can't find anything about the model, I figure I might be using the wrong version of the Palm desktop software. Can anybody help me figure this out? Please?! Thank you!

Hi, i believe the biggest problem in this equation is in using the Palm Desktop software. When I bought a Palm Centro about a year ago I faced the same situation. I know you don't want to spend any more money but after frustratingly trying to get iSync and other methods to sync properly, my troubles ended when I bought Mark/Space's "Missing Sync for Palm" software. It even saves your text messages and call logs. It syncs seamlessly with iCal and Addresses and makes it a simple task to interface with iPhoto and iTunes.
MAAVIC (or however he spells it), says that he's had no issue with iSync, so he may have information that works for him as he is not a fan of Mark/Space. But Missing Sync has been a pearl for me. Enjoy your phone.

Since posting I have registered in the Palm forums, posted a question, and I even got a reply from Palm tech support! Amazing, huh?
This is actually an old Treo 90, which is not a phone. It came with Palm 4.0 software, but I'm using Palm 4.2 on my computer. I think the Palm software I have installed is simply too new, so it's incompatible with the device. I have another question posted to Palm now about what to do about that. If that's the problem, I don't mind downgrading the version, but a free PDA isn't worth the price if I lose all of my contact information and my calendar entries!
Thank you for responding, though. I think this would work just fine with older Palm software, providing switching doesn't break something else that I don't want broken. What's that saying about you get what you pay for?!

I have a Sony Clie VX70 from before dirt. It uses Palm 4.0 firmware and works fine with PD 4.2.1 & 10.5.6.
The kids at Sony were ever anything but helpful where the Mac was concerned.
But there is no doubt that PD is very finicky.
If you haven't already tried, uninstall and reinstall Palm.
Repair Perms in both directions.
Hard reset the device itself.
On the first Sync, manually set the Mac to overwrite the device.

Thanks Fritz. I'm not going to claim the Treo is broken, but I have it temporarily dazed and confused.
I worked on this last night until I got too tired and haven't tackled it again yet today, but I need to figure out how to get it to do a hard reset so I can start over. I did reinstall the Palm desktop software, although I didn't think to repair perms, so I'll do that. I'm at the point where I will either get this thing usable or kill it trying!
