Wacom Intuos4 tablets--small vs. medium?? - laarree - 07-23-2009

I've been using a medium-sized (8x6" active area) Wacom Intuos tablet for years in my home studio (heavy duty Photoshop work), and am thinking about getting one of the new Intuos4 tablets to shlep with me to freelance locations or take on trips to use with a laptop.

I was contemplating getting a small one this time (c. 6x4" active area) instead of the medium (now c. 8.8 x5.5" active area) because of the ease of portability and the lower price.

I'm wondering if anyone here uses Wacom Intuos tablets and can comment on the size issue. The medium size is perfectly comfortable and I'm guessing that I could just as well adapt to a smaller size, but I'd hate to make a purchase and discover otherwise and go thru the PITA of exchanging it.

I have been using a 8x6 Intuos2 for years and really like that size. I have also occasionally used the much larger 12xsomething size and find it ridiculously too big for efficient work. If I wanted to draw that big I would do it for real on a sheet of paper. The point of doing it on the computer is to be more efficient.

Now I don't know if 6x4 is too small, but I would imagine with sufficient dexterity it would be much the same.

I feel the same as mikebw. I have the 8x6 Intuos 2 at work and home and the size feels perfect. The first one I ever had was a 12x12 Calcomp and it was just too big to handle. I also would think the 6x4 wouldn't be too different.

I decided ages ago that the larger sizes were unnecessary for my work, as are the Cintiq hybrid display/tablets. I have no hand-eye coordination problems interfering with using the regular tablets, and have been occasionally amused when co-workers try the pen and tablet and puzzle over how they work together.

I have been using the 21" Cintiq for a few weeks now with Maya and there really is no better way IMO, but I would not consider it to be a replacement for just the tablet as it is too large. However, you can use the Cintiq as just a tablet if you want, just connect the USB cable to your mac but not the DVI cable and it's a tablet.

i've had the 12X12 back in the os9 days and i really liked it as it was almost a 1 to 1 ratio to my monitor..the smaller sizes really amplify the motion of the pen and there is no way to reduce the sensitivity of the tablet...

I would stick to the medium as well. 6x4 is fine as a mouse replacement but you start to lose fine control because the work area needs to be "amplified" so much.

I decided to get the medium Intuos4 and ordered it from Amazon.
Their price had dropped to $315 as of a minute ago, so I jumped
on it. Thanks for all the comments. :-)

It's pretty comfortable. Nice looking. I'm barely using the new LED
panels etc. if at all, but the new stylus/nib holder is a big improvement,
and the mouse is OK as far as mouses (mice?) go.
