Anyone here near Des Plaines IL? - ztirffritz - 07-23-2009 My facility in Des Plaines just lost both our main and our backup network circuit, on two different carriers. Is there some severe weather there by any chance? Re: Anyone here near Des Plaines IL? - Black - 07-24-2009 We had a storm earlier, nothing too crazy though-- the north suburbs got hit harder than the city. Re: Anyone here near Des Plaines IL? - AAA - 07-24-2009 They were NOT able to restore all service within two weeks. Again, some business customers were without complete service for about a year. Re: Anyone here near Des Plaines IL? - AAA - 07-24-2009 I read that in the article, too. Do you want me to explain their inaccuracy? There were businesses that closed up because they could not get service. The CO (central office) had switches (like blade PCs-looking devices) that were not kept in stock at the time and had to be ordered/made. That took forever. The fiber optics were melted and in the large CO like that for the time, with no redundancy in the network, those connections took forever to re-run and re-join. I did not work at that office, but I visited there as part of my work. And I know it was reinforced with us at the time that complete service was not restored until about a year or so. Not sure what special connections/services there were, but I know it was not all plain POTS. And some FAA stuff ran through there. Re: Anyone here near Des Plaines IL? - AAA - 07-24-2009 This article hints at continued outages. http://chicagoist.com/2009/05/08/friday_flashback_call_your_mother_b.php It wasn't until May 23rd that residents got local service back, while regional and long-distance phone service remained spotty at best for some time afterwards. wrote: But again, the details of how bad it was likely was kept in-house. I was personally in meetings with Dick Brown, who was President of Illinois Bell. (and also later CEO of EDS).
