I have one and very much like it. It certainly isn't Audiophile quality, but it is definitely the quickest, easiest way to get your records onto an MP3 file.

If records are going to be mp3s, then most any USB turntable will be good enough.

Convenience is worth something.

I have an old one, but the new ones might be better-like the hinged dust cover. When doing quality work I switch out the kr@ppie stylus with a good diamond Ortafon from my good turntable for much better quality!

My only complaint is that all that stuff has to be done in "real time" and I don't have that much time for recording, editing A&B sides together and doing the clicks and pops stuff, though most of my stuff is pretty clean, and saving or converting it.

I have repurchased all my black vinyl with CD'd (often cheap used ones) and only use the ion for the rare stuff that never came out on CD's.

PS, What is the best software for this, I have tried most of them?

I still like SpinDoctor from Toast. Probably because I began using it when it first shipped and I know how to use it. Haven't really tried anything else. I am sure that some Professional tools would enhance your parameters a great deal!

How about the option of using one of the good portable audio recorders, like the Olympus LS-10? (which I'm going to buy, anyway) 24bit/96k
You could either record using it's line-in jack (? not sure what out jack would go from older stereo pre-amp, tape out?), or even the bult-in mics (would add in the room ambiance...).

Great for scraping all that useless vinyl out of the grooves....

Some info:

Also look at:
http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/4724.asp

I like where Denon is going by converting without PC but there are still some issues:
-Software needed to split tracks and you need a PC
-PC OS, no Mac
-I've read it doesn't stop recording unless you stop it. Not sure if that is the case still.

And:
http://www.altoedge.com/usbaudio/turntables.html

Also Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter has a version for Mac:
http://www.nch.com.au/golden/index.html?ref=alto

I seem to remember seeing a turntable that converted vinyl to a CD burner built into it but I can't remember where.
