Page Numbering in MS Word Help Needed - wowzer - 07-30-2009
I have an MS Word document that has both landscape and portrait sections.
I want the document, when printed to have the page number on the top right hand side of the document...but no where else.
Is there a way to do this in MS Word? When I select the top right in section1 (portrait), in sections 2 and 4, I get the number on the top left of the document when I've printed.
If I do the formatting for landscape (i.e. put it on the bottom right so that after printing and collating into a single document, the number rotates to the top right of the page), the portrait prints have the number on the bottom right.
What I'd like to do is either hide the number in certain sections or just have the program include the number if in landscape (and vice versa).

We've had a number (ha, a pun) of problems with numbering in Word and our solution is to use different Word documents for significantly different sections like the ones you are describing.

You need to set up section breaks, and then I think you can do what you're wanting to do. Bit of a pain, but it'll work.

And if you don't have those sections already set... Good luck. I wrote a book in Word last year, and I put more energy into the software than went into the book.
What I did learn is that there are a number of good tutorials on using Word, so if you haven't Googled, you might want to try that. I'd do it for you (because usually I'm just nice like that), but I don't happen to have time. Sorry.

Yes, I believe Z is correct. You need to create section breaks at each significant formatting change, and then individually format the headers for each section.

Wow, wowzer, I'm needing to do something similar for a dissertation. I made a new section and tried a page break too, but the portrait pages won't number correctly. Also, I need each new chapter page number to be bottom centered, then each succesive page top right numbered. Keep us posted on your progress, and I will also. Will start again tomorrow on this. Making new documents is fine for printing only, not not for keeping a paper in the same doc, which is necessary in the dissertation.

I don't think this is as big a problem as you think it is, wowzer.
1. Put section breaks between your portrait and landscape pages.
2. Click in the footer of pages where the page numbering goes from landscape to portrait and vice versa. In the little window that pops up, make sure to deselect 'same as previous section'.
3. Put the page number wherever you'd like it to be.
4. Put a section break between your landscape and portrait pages.
5. See #2.
6. Repeat steps as necessary.
GuyGene... lets see same sorta thing, but you'll have to put extra section breaks in and reformat the page number differences. Also make sure to use heading numbers at the very least - that way it will automatically pull your chapter numbers into the page numbering system. Convoluted, but makes sense after a while. Almost kinda makes you wish you were using LaTex or something, no? Sigh - I've fucked around with Word formatting too much.

GuyGene - there's an important trivial bit that between sections, you have to do Page Setup in the Header/Footer toolbar then un-click New Page. Once that is done, you can remove the page number with the unlink button.
