Anyone have a Hawking HBB1 Network Optimizer? I have a question... - clay - 08-10-2009

So the other day I had a question about not being able to access Youtube:
http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,775889

The issue actually extends further than that to a handful of other sites i can't access--Facebook (beyond the first page after login), my Chase Visa account page, and maybe one or two others. I decided to try and figure out what was going on last night after having been dealing with the issue for a few days.

Backstory: Within the past week, I replaced my DSL modem, added a wireless router, and added the Hawking HBB1 network optimizer to hopefully increase the quality of VOIP on my network.

Back to my troubleshooting:

So I plugged my computer directly into the modem. I was able to access all the sites just fine. Then I plugged into the router, which was connected directly to the modem. Again, I could access the sites in question. Then I plugged the Hawking HBB1 into the network between the modem and router (where it can handle all the traffic and optimize as advertised). Bam. The sites in question won't work. So that seems to be the culprit...

So what can I do to correct the issue? The HBB1 does help maintain call quality when I'm downloading/uploading or streaming media, so it is useful in that regard. But if there are a few key sites that I can't connect with while this device is part of my network. I have updated the HBB1 firmware (and firmware of all other devices on my network) and have reset the devices multiple times to make sure that it wasn't a configuration issue that was causing the headaches. I have also contacted Hawking tech support, but haven't heard back from them yet...I'll try to call them tonight when I get home.

I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there that owns this device and can provide any ideas or simply indicate that my issues are limited to my particular network setup only. Or if someone else has ideas, I'd be open to trying anything.

Thanks!

This reminds me of that old Henny Youngman joke...

The patient says "Doctor, it hurts when I do this." "Then don't do that!"

In other words, ditch the Hawking.

Can you configure that device at all? Maybe it lies in the settings somewhere.

I have the Hawking HBB1 and have used it for over three years. I have not seen the behavior you describe at all. I just tried and was able to access YouTube and Chase (my credit card account with them). I didn't try facebook as I don't have an account with them and not looking for one at this point.

Anyways, in your earlier post, you mentioned being able to access YouTube via VMWare and XP which would seem to make it more of an issue with OS X and the HBB1 for some reason.

Just a shot in the dark - have you specified specific DNS servers on your routers/computers?

For kicks and giggles, try using the OpenDNS for your DNS server - their DNS servers are:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

The firmware version on my HBB1 is version 1.2 - which is probably the same one you downloaded and installed.

Youtube is working for me on the Mac side--I cleared cache, etc in Safari and that's fine.

Facebook and Chase still aren't loading for me with the HBB1 hooked up. I've tried the OpenDNS DNS servers on both the modem, router, and my computer. No dice.

Firmware is indeed 1.2. I had a chance to talk with tech support and have an email response, but they have been less than helpful, to be honest.

Might need to look into the Linksys version of this device.

That's too bad - it's been a great device for me. Hard to say if it is a bum unit or something specific to your ISP or config.

I, too, would try the Linksys and hope you have better luck.

After quite some time, and several e-mails with incorrect information back-forth to-from Hawking, I finally got HBB1 to work. My default configuration of the unit was incorrect, entirely caused by incomplete and misleading HBB1 documentation.

I have a Linksys Wireless router which is connected to cable modem and HBB1 in between like this:

Linksys---HBB1---modem

This is what I've done:

1) Installed latest v1.20 firmware from Hawking site (just in case), to reset HBB1 to default and make sure i have a device that is up-to-date
2) Restarted router
3) Click on the 'Configuration' menu and select 'Enable Static IP Mode' checkbox to enable it.
4) In the 'ISP Router IP Address' box you need to enter the WAN _gateway_ address and save it.

IMPORTANT: in my case it was gateway server for my ISP provider. Again, this is not my router's WAN address that my ISP had assigned to me, but gateway that is assigned to all other users in my neighborhood. You can get gateway if you directly connect your computer to the modem and then type IPCONFIG /all on the command port.

5) For 'Connection Type' I selected 'cable modem/other' but you may need to select your connection type or leave it at 'auto-detect'.

6) Click save and restart HBB1 by unplugging the power cable.

7) Go back to 'Configuration' page again and click on the 'Start Auto Rate Detection' button. After this step completed HBB1 finally configured itself correctly and I was able to witness that voip and other traffic is prioritized and improved.

What an ordeal for such a simple device!!?

I am disappointed that a company like Hawking have so incomplete and misleading documentation for a product that works quite well. I have wasted so much time following the incorrect documentation and trying to figure out what am I doing wrong.

I hope this helps someone.
