Need FM Transmitter for iPod... - spacescape - 09-23-2009
My wife has a cassette deck in her minivan... I have a 1/8" jack in my car... However, I've been driving a lot for work in their vehicle as of late and want to catchup w/ my PodCasts... So, would like an inexpensive FM transmitter. Any good inexpensive ones out there? I know they are what they are but I need one.

Do you want to plug your iPod in to the transmitter using the headphone jack, or through the dock connector? One will charge the iPod, the other won't. One will require you to constantly adjust the volume up and down, the other won't.

After a few months of usage the rubber(?) coating around the cord cracked and exposed the interior wires. After a few more months of usage two more cracks appeared on the cord. It still works, but the exposed interior wires on the cord (now in three spots) is a little disconcerting. I keep it in the car and only use it for emergencies now.
I'd choose one of the other ones for sale.

Most would say "no" and it would be hard to prove them wrong.
I know they are what they are but I need one.
Well, given that, I have no specific recommendation other than to get one that plugs into 12V. From what I've seen, those types have a stronger signal which could make a noticeable difference in your satisfaction.
If your car antenna is on a front fender, you'll have better luck with a transmitter than if the antenna is in back.
I've had good luck with the old Griffin iTrips, and better with a cheap off-brand cigarette lighter type. But finally, the lack of frequency response moved me to a cassette adapter. If you listen to voice, or music in a non-critical way, a transmitter could be just what your doctor ordered.

I've been very happy with the Monster iCarPlay but, I think it's expensive. I bought the original model several years ago and got a deal at $50 or $60 dollars. The original model had 6 preset stations you would choose between. Here on Long Island, NY we have a lot of radio stations but, I've always been able to find 1 of the 6 that didn't get "stepped on".
The new model has a tuner so, users now can choose from more frequencies.
I don't know how these would work charging your device since Apple changed the pinout (I've had mixed results with some newer iPods / iPhone 3G (charging on some "old" devices and not charging on others).
You can probably pick a used / refurbed (or even new) on eBay or CL for well under MSRP.

But for a different reason - the sound quality, easily, was the WORST of all the different FM transmitters I've owned (3 iPod, 1 SD Card).

There was a thread about FM transmitters just a week or two ago. My advice in that thread was to walk away from FM transitters as well as cassette adapters and just replace the radio with a model that has a face mounted AUX-In jack. More expensive than either an FM transmitter or a cassette adapter but vastly superior. Since the other car has an AUX-IN jack, then you already know from experience about the benefits.
