Anyone use wine (winehq) to run windows apps? - Wailer - 09-23-2009

This is a pretty frustrating experience.

I got it to install via the macports method. I had x11 installed, but not xcode, but otherwise pretty easy following the tutorial.

I can't seem to run any app fully. It comes with what I guess is Internet Explorer but that won't even download the gecko parts needed.

I was able to install quicken 2008 but can't run it. Do I need to install a bunch of winetricks or something?

Has anyone played around with wine and gotten it to work? I really don't want to buy vmfusion, parallels or anything just to a decent version of quicken.

I use it to run Explorer all the time. That's about it, though.

Thanks volcs0

So you can run the version of explorer that it came with?

It seemed to install quicken correctly. I can even run some of the apps like Billminder.exe and RestartExe.exe in new windows, so I believe I have wine installed correctly.

When I tried to run IE that it came with, it said it need to install some gecko files and it seemed to stall so I hit cntrl-c. I then tried "wine iexplorer.exe" and I get a new X11 window opening and "fixmeConfusedhdocvw:ClOleCommandTarget_Exec (0x12eeec)->((null) 21 2 0x0 0x0)" and nothing else.

That's odd. I ran the installer and just let it install IE - no problems.

I've had good luck with darwine for simple things.

I tried:

sh winetricks ie6

and was able to get internet explorer running. I see lots of text scrolling in the terminal window, but since the browser seems fine I'm guessing this is as expected.

I can get a lot of basic things running perfectly like windows explorer and notepad. Most installs go very smoothly. It's just when you go to run them they either produce errors or windows with nothing in them.

I'm guessing I need to find the correct winetricks to install.

It's very impressive though. If I could get the pc version of quicken 2009 running, I'd be pretty thrilled.
